Samsung raises the cost of semiconductor wafers. Top smartphones on Snapdragon 888 and Nvidia GeForce RTX 30 graphics cards may rise in price

Published

on

According to the source, Samsung has decided to increase the cost of 12-inch semiconductor wafers by up to 20%. According to industry sources, Samsung has already notified its customers of the price hike, but this came as no surprise to most given the acute shortage of chips (which could last until 2023). Interestingly, Samsung announced this just a few days after its main competitor, TSMC, made a similar decision.

The increase in the cost of semiconductor wafers has already been accepted by some Samsung customers, while others expect to sign new contracts. Despite the fact that prices in general will rise up to 20%, the mark-up will be different for different clients of the company – depending on the volume of orders, production technology and the duration of the contract. The renewed contracts should take effect within the next 4-5 months.

What can the increase in price of plates result in? In the rise in the price of single-chip systems, and here at risk are the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 and Snapdragon 888 Plus platforms, as well as the Nvidia GeForce RTX 30 video cards (that is, the Ampere family). Alas, given the general shortage of mobile single-chip systems and GPUs on the market, one might think that top-end smartphones and video cards will rise in price. In the case of the latter, the price is also pushed up by the growing quotes of cryptocurrencies.

In less than a year, the situation on the video cards and processors market may improve. The head of AMD spoke about the shortage of chips

AMD CEO Lisa Su expressed her opinion on the duration of the chip shortage. According to her statement, in the first half of 2022, the supply is likely to still be limited.

But already in the second half of next year, the shortage of microcircuits will not be as acute as it is now. How much the situation will change, the head of AMD did not predict, but her vision is still better than that of a number of other specialists who predict improvement only in 2023.

It should be understood that AMD itself does not produce semiconductors, so we are talking about improving the situation in general, which will affect not only AMD, but all other companies as well.

In general, so far most forecasts agree that the situation with the deficit will improve at least in the second half of 2022 or at the beginning of 2023, but no one undertakes to predict when the situation will completely return to normal.
