Samsung poised to overthrow Intel and become the leading semiconductor company

Published

on

Intel has been the leading semiconductor company by sales volume for quite some time now. However, according to IC Insight’s prediction, South Korean giant Samsung is ready to take the lead.

According to IC Insight, Samsung will rank # 1 in semiconductor sales in the second quarter of this year, overthrowing Intel. While Intel’s sales are declining, Samsung has steadily ramped up sales over the past few years.

In terms of semiconductor sales in the first quarter of 2021, Samsung earned $ 17.1 billion, while Intel received $ 18.7 billion in the same period. Now, according to IC Insight, Intel’s sales will fall to $ 17.9 billion in the second quarter of 2021, while Samsung’s sales in this category will rise to $ 18.5 billion.

Samsung overtook Intel in Q2 2017 sales, ending Intel’s 24-year reign in the segment. At the time, the South Korean giant managed to hold the top spot for six quarters before Intel took the lead again.

Since then, Samsung’s semiconductor sales have grown steadily at a faster pace than Intel. The report claims that the trend for Samsung to overtake Intel again will continue throughout the second quarter of 2021.
