Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 will receive a unique solution for user recognition: the fingerprint scanner will work on two screens at once

The new patent indicates that Samsung intends to equip its foldable Galaxy Z Fold4 phone with a unique under-display fingerprint scanner. Its peculiarity lies in the fact that it will be able to scan prints from both sides of the display.

Previously, it was expected that the Z Fold3 will be equipped with a fingerprint sensor, like regular Samsung Galaxy smartphones. However, in the end, the South Korean company decided to use a side-mounted fingerprint scanner. Now, documents indicate that Samsung has decided to implement a fingerprint recognition method that has never been used before.

A patent entitled “A foldable electronic device capable of detecting a fingerprint on at least part of the display” was published on October 7, 2021. It describes the fingerprint sensor positioned in such a way that it can be used both through the outer screen and through the foldable inner screen. This is made possible by placing the sensor under the lower left half of the flexible screen. A small PCB is placed between the sensors, which in turn connects to the main PCB. This opens up a new possibility of biometric authentication in both the unfolded and folded position.

In the patent, Samsung claims that because a foldable device has a flexible screen, it is more likely to wrinkle when you press the screen. So the existing fingerprint technology needs to be changed to get around this limitation, and a two-way fingerprint sensor seems to be the best solution.

With the increasing competition in the smartphone market, Samsung, which is still the leader in this segment, must introduce something new in order to stand out and maintain a dominant position.

Vodafone is suing the UK over a contract to develop a hacker-proof communication line

The company considers it unfair that the contract was awarded to Fujitsu, although both bidders did not meet the requirements.

Mobile operator Vodafone filed in court against the UK government after losing a tender to develop a hacker-proof communications system, in which the Japanese company Fujitsu also took part.

Although both bidders were found to have failed to meet the government’s minimum requirements, Vodafone believes Fujitsu was unfairly awarded a £ 184m ($ 254m) contract to improve the communications system used by 532 British embassies and other agencies.

The Echo 2 project aims to provide secure communications for the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office, employees and agents in over 170 countries.

According to the government, the current communications system operated by Vodafone is “outdated” and poses a risk to national security.

Vodafone went to court after Cable & Wireless, acquired by the operator in 2012, lost its long-term contract for the Echo 1.

“We do not believe that the procurement process was carried out correctly. The contracting authority itself admitted that the Fujitsu Solution was ‘not fit for purpose,’ said a Vodafone spokesman.

According to foreign ministry lawyers, Fujitsu’s proposal had problems with two requirements, but generally met the terms of the tender. Fujitsu representatives did not comment on the situation.

The trial in this case is scheduled for January 2022. The court allowed the UK government to enter into a “conditional contract” with Fujitsu. The details of the contract were not disclosed due to security concerns.
