E-mobility startup Rivian, heavily backed by Amazon, has announced plans to build a proprietary charging network in North America. The company plans to install 10,000 charging stations in the US and Canada. This number includes both powerful fast chargers installed on highways and so-called second-level charging stations with a capacity of 11.5 kW – they will be located in remote places (for example, near parks).
Each section of the Rivian Adventure Network (RAN) will include multiple charging stations conveniently located on highways and major highways, close to cafes and shops. Proprietary DC fast chargers are intended only for owners of Rivian cars – the promising Rivian R1T pickup truck and R1S SUV. But since Rivian is a maker of Amazon electric delivery vans, they will likely be able to use the Rivian Adventure Network as well.
The first RAN charging stations will open in Colorado parks this July. Data on RAN points will be embedded in the navigation systems of the company’s cars, and a complete list of them will be presented in the corporate mobile application. Rivian claims the charging network will be powered exclusively by renewable energy sources.

Vertical Aerospace conducted manned tests of an electric tiltrotor, which they plan to use in an air taxi
Vertical Aerospace has conducted the first flight tests of the VX4 eVTOL, which is planned to be used in the same.
Many companies have been developing flying taxis in recent years. They are often battery powered and fly by an electric motor, as this reduces noise, eliminates harmful emissions and greatly simplifies the maintenance of engines and transmissions.
Now Vertical Aerospace has tested its version of the air taxi. The engineers were so confident in the design that the first test flight took place in manned mode. During it, the prototype only slightly lifted off the ground, and therefore the company did not publish a video. The VX4 eVTOL is a tiltrotor – that is, it takes off vertically like a helicopter, after which it turns the propellers and continues to fly like an airplane.
In total, 8 propellers are installed on the experimental tiltrotor, of which 4 are used only during takeoff and landing and are folded in cruising mode. Vertical Aerospace claims a top speed of 325 km/h and a range of over 161 km. Thus, the tiltrotor will not only be able to fly around the city, but also allow you to travel in a small region, and is also capable of performing some light regional duties. The developer claims to have received more than 1,400 conditional pre-orders from a range of airlines, tour groups and other operators. This is a lot: for comparison, only about 1,000 civilian helicopters are produced per year.
BMW XM supercrossover unveiled – the first ever M-hybrid
In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the BMW M division, the German manufacturer has unveiled the new BMW XM hybrid super-crossover. This is BMW’s first plug-in hybrid with the M prefix.
The new BMW XM is built on a hybrid platform, which consists of a 4.4-liter V8 petrol engine with 489 hp. with 650 Nm of torque and a 196 hp electric motor. The car received an eight-speed M Steptronic automatic transmission.
Acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h takes 4.3 seconds, and the maximum speed is limited to 250 or 270 km / h, depending on the configuration. The battery with a capacity of 25.7 kWh allows the crossover to drive on pure electricity up to 88 km.
The BMW XM is a full-size luxury crossover with a length of 5.1 meters and a wheelbase similar to the BMW X7 (3.1 mm). In the exterior of the new model, the emphasis is on golden details: rims, glass edges, grille trim and other body elements.
The interior of the car has a five-seater configuration (2 + 3). The BMW M multifunctional seats are upholstered in real leather and feature ambient lighting. A total of four trim options will be offered to choose from.
Production of the BMW XM will start in December this year, and in the spring of 2023 it will be available from dealers around the world. The main markets for new items will be the United States, China and the Middle East.
