Rise of the machines: dozens of driverless Chevrolet Bolts blocked traffic in Texas
Recently in Austin, Texas, USA, an incident took place involving dozens of unmanned Chevrolet Bolt cars from Cruise, which caused a traffic jam on San Gabriel Street.
X (formerly Twitter) users posted a ton of videos and photos. Some cars drove into the oncoming lane, blocking the road for other unmanned Chevrolet Bolts and other road users.
The cause of the jam is still unknown. Observers saw Cruise employees on scene attempting to operate the vehicles remotely to correct the situation. A spokesman said the problem may have been related to pedestrian traffic.
“Pedestrian and vehicle traffic on the street was heavy,” a Cruise spokesperson told The Drive. “Our vehicles are designed with safety first, including consideration for pedestrians.”
Cruise constantly monitors its fleet and we were warned about crowds on Sunday morning. We were able to resolve the issue and all vehicles left the area on their own. We apologize for any inconvenience.

The incident caught the attention of Austin City Councilman Zohaib Qadri, who called both incidents a “mess” and said he intends to voice his safety concerns at the next council meeting.
