Review of the ultra-thin budget Oppo A91: characteristics, price, features

Oppo has provided us with a very interesting smartphone Oppo A91, which is one of the few models in the budget segment, in which the emphasis is on design, rather than on “maximum performance at its price”, which is what interests it.

Design Oppo A91

Oppo A91 is the case when you want to talk about design. We are already accustomed to the fact that modern smartphones are quite heavy and thick, especially for devices in the middle price segment, but Oppo A91 in this regard – a nice exception, because it weighs 172 grams at a thickness of 7.9 millimeters.

The body materials are nice, but I would like to see a metal frame instead of a plastic one. There are no complaints about the back panel – it is made of glossy glass, which looks really nice. We have a dark blue version with a beautiful overflow.

The smartphone is equipped with a really good AMOLED-display with a diagonal of 6.4 ″ with Full HD + resolution adjusted to the aspect ratio of 20: 9, which is quite nice, considering the price of the smartphone, covered with Corning Gorilla Glass 5. Oppo A91 supports DC Dimming 2.0 technology , thanks to which the eyes do not get tired when reading at low brightness. The maximum level of brightness in direct sunlight is also sufficient.

The Oppo A91 runs on a budget 12-nanometer MediaTek Helio P70 chipset, and that’s not a strong point of the model. If the processor is not the most powerful here, but does not cause special questions in terms of work, then the graphics adapter is not so good – here is Mali-G72 MP3, which in 2020 looks like this. The smartphone is clearly not suitable for gamers.

Oppo A91, which we have under review, is equipped with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of flash memory, which is quite enough for the average user. In general, the trend of installing 6 or more GB of RAM and 128 and above GB of internal memory in affordable smartphones is really nice. The amount of internal memory can be expanded with a microSD memory card.

Despite the small thickness and weight of the smartphone, it received a good, though not a record battery with a capacity of 4025 mAh, which in active use is enough for a day. In case the battery still sat down, there is a fast charging VOOC 3.0 with a capacity of 20W.

Camera in Oppo A91

We were a little surprised by the capabilities of the Oppo A91 camera. The smartphone received a main quad-camera, which includes a main sensor of 48 MP, ultra-wide 8 MP, macro 2 MP and a depth sensor 2 MP. Interestingly, the smartphone, despite the not very high price, has a night mode and expert mode, and it really shoots quite well. The 16 MP front camera here, wide-angle, located in the cutout at the top of the display, also takes good photos.

In terms of video, the Oppo A91, like most smartphones in this price segment, performs poorly. There is no support for 4K and even Full HD 60 fps, the maximum is 1080p 30 fps, which is rare nowadays. When shooting video, only digital stabilization is available, which performs quite poorly.

It is comforting that the smartphone is equipped with a 3.5 millimeter jack, although in terms of sound Oppo A91 is not the best. I also liked that Oppo included headphones with a microphone in the package, which, as for the complete ones, sound good, but the multimedia speaker here is of medium quality.

There is a fingerprint scanner that works surprisingly fast and stable, and we would recommend using it for authentication, despite the possibility of unlocking on the face. The fact is that it uses only a front camera, which is not very safe, and in low light the smartphone will automatically raise the brightness of the display to illuminate your face to unlock, which is not very pleasant in the dark.

There is support for Wi-Fi 802.11 ac, Bluetooth 4.2 and FM radio. Unfortunately, the smartphone does not have NFC, and this is quite unpleasant.

Oppo A91 costs $ 290, and it clearly does not claim the title of “maximum for its price”. This is a designer smartphone, which is designed for the undemanding user, who is primarily important balance of weight, thickness, cameras and autonomy. With its camera you can take good photos, with the help of “Night mode” and “Expert” mode. In addition, the device boasts good autonomy and fast charging. And we can not fail to mention the thin and light body, high-quality screen and lack of advertising in ColorOS.
