Renesas expands line of 28nm microcontrollers for cars

Renesas Electronics this week unveiled a group of RH850 / U2B microcontrollers designed to meet the growing need to integrate multiple applications on a single chip and implement a single electronic control unit (ECU) for the evolving electro-electronic (E / E) architecture. Providing a combination of high performance, flexibility, noise immunity and safety, the RH850 / U2B cross-domain MCUs are built for demanding vehicle motion workloads including powerplant control, zone control, gateway connectivity, and multi-domain applications.

Designed for zonal and domain applications, the new microcontrollers build on key features from the Renesas RH850 / E2x series for powertrains and the RH850 / C1M-Ax series for electric vehicle engine control. In addition, they offer improved performance and safety. This allegedly allows multiple functions to be integrated into a single ECU while meeting the automotive’s stringent safety, security and real-time requirements.

The MCU’s built-in hypervisor hardware-based virtualization support allows multiple software systems with functional security levels up to ISO26262 ASIL D to operate independently and reduces virtualization overhead to support real-time execution. Quality of Service (QoS) provides latency monitoring and throttling for all bus masters to ensure that the minimum bandwidth is always available. The RH850 / U2B microcontrollers support safe and fast, no-wait OTA software updates with two banks of on-board flash memory, which allows the ECU to update when the microcontrollers are active and use the previous version if a failure occurs. The Integrated Engine Control Accelerator (EMU3S) works in conjunction with several dedicated engine control timer structures such as the GTM v4. 1 and TSG3 in order to significantly reduce the load on the processor while achieving high rpm. Dedicated Data Flow Accelerator (DFP) frees the CPU from performing resource-intensive operations.

RH850 / U2B microcontrollers are configured with up to eight cores running at 400 MHz, four, RISC-V vector expansion coprocessor (DFP) for accelerating mathematical algorithms, and other blocks, such as Gigabit Ethernet TSN with switch functionality, converters and accelerators.

Samples of the RH850 / U2B microcontrollers will be available starting April 2022.

Global NCAP experts decided to bring together in one crash test two similar cars created for different markets.

Are American lives more important than Mexican lives? Crash test of two Hyundai cars for different markets clearly showed the problem of double standards in the industry

Hyundai Accent for the US market and Hyundai Grand i10 for Mexico and Latin America decided to push their foreheads together. These are the most affordable models of the Korean company, which are sold in their respective markets. This is not the same car under different names, as sometimes happens, but still the difference in results was huge.

Just one video is enough to understand that the Grand i10 received much more damage. Unfortunately, the same applies to mannequins. Grand i10 is equipped with only two frontal airbags compared to six in Accent. This further aggravated the situation for the first model. It ended up with zero stars. The source does not disclose the Accent result, but speaks of good driver protection. In addition, if you look at the IHSS website, you can see that this car received the maximum score on almost all points.

With this comparison, Global NCAP specialists want to draw attention to the problem of double standards of automakers that are used when creating cars for different markets.

The Wall Street Journal: Tesla will close one of its offices in California and lay off 200 employees who worked on improving the autopilot

According to the publication, in order to reduce costs, the company is closing an office in San Mateo. More than half of its staff has received notices of dismissal from their positions, and the remainder of the staff will be distributed among other company offices. It is noted that most of the employees who were laid off were engaged in improving the Tesla autopilot.

Earlier, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said he had a “very bad feeling about [американской] economy” and warned of the intention to “cut approximately 10% of employees” and “suspend hiring worldwide.” Speaking at the technology All-in Summit conference in Miami in mid-May, Musk said that the United States economy is in a recession and will come out of it no earlier than a year.

Bloomberg suggested that by 2035, many automakers will have to switch to the production of electric vehicles. The agency also noted that the EU initiative actually heralds the end of the era of internal combustion engines (ICE).

Earlier, the European Parliament also supported a ban on the sale of cars and vans with above-zero CO2 emissions from fossil fuels after 2035.
