AMD has unveiled its new flagship Radeon RX 7000 graphics cards.

Only two older models were announced today: RX 7900 XT and RX 7900 XTX. Both will go on sale December 13th.

It’s worth starting with the fact that the new items turned out to be surprisingly inexpensive, if you focus on the older GeForce RTX 40 cards. For the RX 7900 XTX they ask for $ 1,000, and the RX 7900 XT is priced at $ 900. Whether the new AMD flagship will be able to compete with the new Nvidia flagship is still difficult to say. AMD itself does not compare new products with competitor cards at all, offering a comparison of the RX 7900 XTX with the RX 6950 XT.

According to this comparison, the new card is 50-70% faster than the old one in 4K. More specifically, AMD is talking about up to a 70% advantage in games without ray tracing, and up to 60% with ray tracing enabled.

And while we can’t directly compare the RX 7900 XTX with the RTX 4090, we have comparisons of the latter with the RX 6950 XT. Judging by TechPowerUp tests, for example, in Watch Dogs Legion, the new Nvidia is about 1.64 times faster than the previous AMD flagship. Thus, the RX 7900 XTX should be very close to the RTX 4090. But in Cyberpunk 2077, the Nvidia flagship is 1.82 times faster than the previous AMD flagship, that is, the gap from the RX 7900 XTX should be slightly larger. So, at least without ray tracing, the RX 7900 XTX should be close to the RTX 4090, but Nvidia’s new one is apparently a bit faster. And in a direct comparison of flagship with flagship, it turns out that, apparently, the Nvidia card is faster. The only caveat is that it is also 60% more expensive! The RX 7900 XTX is not just much cheaper, it is significantly cheaper than even the RTX 4080. We don’t have tests of the latter, but we have data from Nvidia itself, and here, apparently, the new AMD will be faster. With such a huge difference in price, if the RTX 4090 is on average faster than the RX 7900 XTX by 10-20%, it will be a clear victory for AMD. Otherwise, you need to wait for the tests.

Now let’s move on to the parameters. Both of AMD’s new products are based on the Navi 31 GPU, which was the first consumer GPU made up of chips. In this case, there is a main 15-meter die with all computing units and up to six crystals (6 nm) containing Infinity Cache and memory controllers. The GPU itself contains 12,288 stream processors, of which 10,752 are active in the RX 7900 XT. In addition, the older card has all six Infinity Cache crystals with a total volume of 96 MB, while the younger one has five crystals, i.e. 80 MB. By the way, this is less than the older cards of the previous generation, but at the same time, the new products have a much wider memory bus: 384 and 320 bits for the RX 7900 XTX and RX 7900 XT, respectively. Together with 20 GHz GDDR6 memory, the bandwidth in the same order is 960 and 800 GB / s.

Navi 31 will contain 58 billion transistors. The RX 7900 XTX has 96 Ray Accelerators for ray tracing, while the RX 7900 XT has 84 Ray Accelerators. The GPU frequency of the older card is 1900-2500 MHz, while the younger one is 1500-2400 MHz. Considering that modern GPUs have real frequencies in games that have long been much higher than those declared, it will be interesting to see what they will be like for new cards, since earlier AMD solutions were distinguished by a higher GPU frequency, but for the RTX 4090 even the declared one reaches 2520 MHz, and the real ones are much above.

It is also worth noting that the older new AMD received 24 GB of memory, while the younger one is content with 20 GB. From the rest, relatively small dimensions can be noted: 287 and 276 mm, respectively. In addition, the cards take up only 2.5 expansion slots. All this is probably the result of not the highest power consumption: 355 W for the older card and 300 W for the younger one.

And this, in turn, is a consequence of the improved energy efficiency of the RDNA 3 architecture. AMD itself says that energy efficiency has increased by 54%.

Another important feature is support for the latest DisplayPort 2.1 standard – AMD new products received such ports first on the market. They also have a USB-C connector.

But that’s not all. For example, AMD talks about the Dual Media Engine, which supports simultaneous encoding or decoding of up to 8K/60fps streams for HEVC and supports AV1 encoding. The Radiance Display engine provides 12-bit color per channel for displaying up to 68 billion colors.

But in this case, the second USB-C with Thunderbolt is installed with a very specific meaning – to connect a second monitor. Well, if there is no second monitor, then the second USB-C can come up with various applications. For example, charge a smartphone with it or connect peripherals.

In addition to two USB-C, ViewFinity S8UT is equipped with three USB 3.0 Type-A, RJ-45 connector for wired network connection, HDMI port. The monitor also received built-in stereo speakers and a convertible stand that allows you to adjust the height and transfer the device from landscape to portrait mode and vice versa.
