Quantum materials to reduce energy consumption

Information and communication technologies use approximately 8% of the world’s electricity supply. This volume doubles every year, in part because of the use of transistors. Australian researchers have found that using a quantum material could reduce considerably the energy used in information and communication technologies.

These researchers found they could reduce tension and energy using a negative capacitor. They applied the negative capacity so that the transistors operate at a lower voltage. This technique would make it possible to greatly divide the energy losses and thus an optimal use of fossil energies.

These new types of quantum materials represent the future of information and communication technologies. Their use will certainly revolutionize the world and bring us closer to this long-awaited future ecological world.

Transistors waste energy

The transistors are electronic switches. In devices, they can be either on or off. To turn it on or off, you have to waste a tiny amount of energy each time. But devices, computers for example, contain billions of transistors that switch billions of times per second.

This constitutes a huge amount energy wasted in the form of heat. This wastage is partly due to the use of silicon for chips. These semiconductors are insulators that do not normally conduct current. Nevertheless, faced with a little additional electrical charge, they become conductive.

It is therefore this ability of silicon to activate and deactivate which is the basis of these transistor switchings. This therefore leads to a waste of energy that has made scientists think for several years.

Using negative capacitor could reduce losses

One negative capacitor is an electrical component that has a negative capacitance. It then charges without charging back. This is exactly the role of ferroelectrics which are used for the design of transistors. The advantage with a negative capacitor is the low voltage switching transistors.

Indeed, the addition of a negative capacity which is a ferroelectric material to make a transistor based on negative capacitance amplifies the electric field. This amplification makes it possible to switch to much lower voltages and energies, i.e. a use ten times lower than that of silicon.

This would be a solution for save energy. Although these findings are not yet applicable, the researchers expect to provide a clear plan very soon for reducing the energy of future transistors.

Elon Musk has confirmed that SpaceX has completed a lengthy static fire test of the Booster 7 Raptor 2 engines on the orbital launch pad at Starbase.

On Tuesday, SpaceX tested its super-heavy rocket for about 12 seconds, making it the longest launch to date. The test, which fired 11 of the 33 Raptor 2 rocket engines, passed without any explosions or other problems, which is an excellent result.

Earlier this month, SpaceX fired 14 Raptor 2 engines on that booster for a few seconds, so yesterday’s test didn’t set a new record for most engines tested. However, this “long” test was the longest ever to run so many Raptor 2 engines at the same time.
