Qualcomm plans to return to the server processor segment, which will be based on the developments of Nuvia. Qualcomm acquired this company last year. Nuvia itself is developing Arm chips that should be faster and more energy efficient than AMD Epyc and Intel Xeon. However, after the merger of the companies, there was no talk of server solutions.

Now Qualcomm intends to return to the server market again. It is possible that this was done against the backdrop of the success of Ampere Computig, which supplies its solutions for the Google Cloud Platform and Microsoft Azure, as well as for servers from Gigabyte, HPE and other companies.

In addition, AWS has its own Graviton Arm processors. It uses the third generation, but the cloud service, according to the source, drew attention to the new server chips from Qualcomm.

Thus, the expansion of this market and the emergence of a new player on it is possible soon. Note that a few years ago, Qualcomm had Centriq 2400 server processors, but they were abandoned in 2018, focusing on mobile chips.

According to Nvidia official data, the GeForce RTX 4090 is the only model that, at a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels and ultra settings, can provide frame rates in excess of 500 fps. The result is, of course, impressive. And it is even more impressive against the background of the GeForce RTX 4080, which is one step lower with 16 GB of memory – this model is capable of only 368 fps under the same conditions. However, both of these models are suitable for 360-Hz monitors.

The performance gaps between the GeForce RTX 4080 12GB, RTX 3080 and RTX 3070 are not that big anymore, but still noticeable.

Nvidia recommends using the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti when playing games at Full HD resolutions above 360Hz, while the GeForce RTX 3060 can be used with Full HD monitors that support 144Hz.

Tachyum has revealed new details about its Prodigy processors, which the company calls the world’s first general-purpose processors.

In particular, the performance (FP64) of the top 128-core Prodigy T16128-AIX is three times greater than that of the latest monstrous Nvidia H100 accelerator! If Nvidia’s solution is talking about 30 TFLOPS after the recent spec update, the Prodigy T16128-AIX offers 90 TFLOPS! Single precision (FP32) performance is also three times better: 180 TFLOPS vs. 60 TFLOPS. Moreover, in some other modes (INT8 and FP8) the processor is six times faster than the new Nvidia.

It can also be noted that a standard server rack with liquid-cooled Prodigy T16128-AIX processors offers a performance (FP64) of 12.9 PFLOPS versus 960 TFLOPS for the same rack with Nvidia H100.

Compared to conventional processors, the Prodigy T16128-AIX is four times faster than the Intel Xeon Platinum 8380 in Specrate 2017 INT Performance tests and 40 times faster in double precision floating point calculations. Also, the novelty is better than Google’s fourth-generation specialized TPU.

Recall that Prodigy processors are universal, that is, capable of conditionally executing any code using a dynamic binary translator, so that they can perform tasks that are typical for both CPUs and GPUs or TPUs.

Tachyum expects that it will receive the first samples of its processors before the end of this year, and mass production will start in the second half of next year.
