Qualcomm makes aptX and aptX HD codecs free for Android smartphone manufacturers
Qualcomm has made its aptX and aptX HD audio codecs free. That is, now mobile device manufacturers can implement support for these codecs without paying licensing fees to Qualcomm.
Previously, according to some sources, manufacturers had to pay $6,000 as a one-time fee and then pay $1 for each item sold.
Now aptX and aptX HD are part of the Android Open Source Project. In fact, this happened a few months ago, but for some reason it became known only now.
A few months ago we made the decision to include encoders for classic aptX and aptX HD in the Android Open Source Project. This technology is known worldwide as the most excellent audio codec for Bluetooth wireless audio, and we have worked closely with both Google and individual OEMs over the years. We are pleased to announce that these encoders are indeed now available under the AOSP license from Qualcomm.
In addition, Qualcomm clarified that aptX and aptX HD Encoders will be free, while other aptX products will still require licenses. That is, decoders in headphones will still be paid.

Fineday is currently raising funds on Kickstarter to launch a keyboard that can be connected wirelessly via Bluetooth 5.0 to a Windows or Mac computer, as well as an iOS or Android tablet or smartphone. Mobile devices can be fixed like a sheet of paper right on the keyboard, which is made in the style of classic typewriters.
The keyboard can also be wired. If it works via Bluetooth, the device will need two AA batteries as a power source – nothing is said about the battery life.
Both the Fineday case and the surfaces of all its keys are made from 6063 anodized aircraft grade aluminum. The characters are engraved on the keys so they shouldn’t wear off as quickly as on a regular keyboard. Each key hides a Cherry MX Blue switch and is LED backlit.
Along with these keys, Fineday also has left and right knobs. The left knob adjusts the brightness of the backlight, while the right knob adjusts the volume of the paired device.
Early buyers can purchase the devices for $655 and end up with a price of $1,100.

Arm has unveiled the Cortex-X4 supercore, which will be used in the next generation of flagship single-chip systems.
Arm is talking about a 15% performance boost, which is a lot for a single generation. In addition, Cortex-X4 is the most efficient Arm super-core ever.
Interestingly, in the press release dedicated to Cortex-X4, most of the text concerns not quite the newest core. Arm also unveiled its most powerful CPU cluster ever. In this case, we mean the possibility of combining Cortex-X4 with the new Cortex-A720 and A520 cores.
The basis of the cluster is the new block DynamIQ DSU-120, which allows you to cluster 14 processor cores. Of course, this is not required for smartphones, but it is a good start for platforms aimed at PC. As an example, Arm gives a cluster of 10 Cortex-X4 cores and four Cortex-A720. The block also supports L3 cache up to 32 MB and new intelligent power saving modes.
Separately, Arm mentioned a cluster with a core formula of 1 + 5 + 2. It is this configuration that is attributed to the SoC Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.

Honor today introduced the Honor 90 Pro smartphone, the main feature of which was the screen. It supports 3840Hz PWM and has been certified by TUV Rheinland to be flicker-free, which even people with very sensitive eyes will not notice. Yesterday we clearly showed that in this regard, it turned out to be Galaxy S23 Ultra and iPhone 14 Pro.
According to the international standard IEEE Std1789-2015, when the screen flicker frequency exceeds 3125Hz, stroboscopic flicker does not pose a danger to human eyes. The current PWM frequencies of 2160 Hz, 1920 Hz and 1440 Hz, which are widely used in flagships, are still noticeable.
The Honor 90 series screen has a contrast ratio of 5,000,000:1, supports 1.07 billion colors and 10-bit color depth. The Honor 90 Pro uses a 6.78-inch screen.
Honor 90 Pro is equipped with a 200-megapixel 1/1.4-inch optical format main camera that supports 16-pixel binning with an equivalent pixel size of 2.24 microns. It also features a 12MP ultra-wide-angle macro lens and a 32MP telephoto portrait lens with 1x, 2x and 2.5x modes.
On the front of the Honor 90 Pro is a 50MP portrait dual camera that supports 100° ultra wide-angle shooting. The minimum focusing distance can be as short as 2.5 cm.
The smartphone received a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 single-chip system, as well as a 5000 mAh battery that supports 90-watt charging.
Honor 90 received a 6.7-inch screen, Snapdragon 7 Gen 1, a 200-megapixel camera, the same battery and 66-watt charging.
