The source published the specifications and images of the Asus ROG Strix Scar 15 G533Z laptop. In the list of specifications for a promising novelty, the first two positions attract attention – a processor and a video card. Neither component has yet been officially presented – their debut is expected at CES 2022 in early January.

The Ryzen 9 6900HX will be the flagship of the upcoming AMD Ryzen 6000 line. This APU will be built on the Zen3 + microarchitecture, 8 cores and multithreading support. It is credited with a completely new graphics core based on the RDNA2 architecture, support for DDR5 memory and PCIe 4 bus.

The GeForce RTX 3080 Ti, in turn, will be the first Nvidia graphics card based on the GA103 GPU. It is credited with 7,424 CUDA cores and 16GB of GDDR6 memory. This video card will be the most powerful in the line of mobile Ampere, but at the same time it will retain the 256-bit memory bus as in the mobile GeForce RTX 3080 and GeForce RTX 3070.

As for the Asus ROG Strix Scar 15 G533Z itself, it has already appeared in the database of the American regulator – the US Federal Communications Commission. Thanks to which there is an image of the lower panel of the laptop. In addition to the above processor and 3D card, the laptop is assigned 32 GB of DDR5-4800 RAM, a 1 TB SSD, a 15.6-inch QHD screen with a frame rate of 165 Hz.

Acer Nitro 5 laptops with Core i7-12700H and i5-12500H processors spotted on the website of a French store

The source found three laptops on the PC21.fr site with 12th generation Intel Core processors (Alder Lake). In the configuration of one of them, the mobile video card GeForce RTX 3070 Ti is indicated. This Acer Nitro AN515-58 gaming laptop is built with a 14-core Intel Core i7-12700H processor and 8GB of DDR4-3200 memory. The display with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels supports refresh rates up to 165 Hz.

In addition, the website of the French store confirms plans to release Acer Nitro 5 laptops (AN517-55 and AN515-58) powered by Core i5-12500H processor with mobile RTX 3050 Ti graphics card. In fact, this is the first time any retailer has mentioned such a GPU. Both laptops are expected to cost less than € 1,300 (inclusive of VAT), which is unfortunately higher than the starting price of € 999 for the latest generation of RTX 3060 gaming laptops.

Specifications for the RTX 3070 Ti are still unknown. The card is expected to have a stripped-down GA104 GPU with fewer cores than the RTX 3080 (6144) and more than the RTX 3070 (5120). The GDDR6 memory will be 8 GB and the bus width will be 256 bits.

As for the Core i5-12500H processor, it is rumored to have 12 cores and can execute 16 threads, which implies 4 high-performance cores and 8 energy-efficient cores. Clock rates are not yet known.

The release of these new products is expected in January, after CES 2022.

PNY has started selling X-PRO 90 UHS-II SDXC memory cards, according to the source, “designed to keep pace with the growing demand for high-definition photo and video recording.” The line includes storage media of 64, 128 and 256 GB. UHS-II support enables write speeds up to 280MB / s and read speeds up to 300MB / s. That’s enough for 8K video and burst photography.

X-PRO 90 cards are marked with the V90 speed class, meaning that the read and write speed does not fall below 90 MB / s. Of course, this speed is only possible if the memory is used in conjunction with a UHS-II device.

Small E-cores in Intel Alder Lake processors are very bad at gaming

Our colleagues from TechSpot have conducted extensive testing of Alder Lake processors in games from an unusual perspective. They tested how different cores and their configurations affect gaming performance and how this compares to other CPUs.

They took the Core i9-12900K, Core i7-12700K and Core i5-12600K, capped them at 4.2 GHz and tested them in three configurations: with four large cores, four small cores, and two small and two large active cores. Thus, the source checked not only the three configurations, but also the impact on the performance of the L3 cache, since in the conditions described above, only this was the difference between the above three.

As for the rest of the test participants, they were similarly limited in frequency and number of cores, except that in all other cases, of course, it was always about only four ordinary large cores. The Radeon RX 6900 XT was chosen as the video card, and the settings always meant maximum graphics quality and Full HD resolution.

The source has diagrams for seven different games, but we only present one final one.

Small E-cores in Intel Alder Lake processors are very bad at gaming

So what can be learned from this specific testing? Most importantly, small E-cores are ineffective for gaming. If in a number of applications (and even in one game) small cores can really be compared with Skylake cores, as Intel itself claims, then in most games the Gracemont architecture cannot compete with Skylake at all. Four small cores can be somewhere between Ivy Bridge and Haswell, and can also compete with the first generation Zen. Of course, this is not bad at all for very energy efficient and compact cores, but nevertheless, for games in modern realities, they are much worse than other not even the most modern solutions. And the reason for this lies in the delays in the exchange of data between the cores. If for large cores it is 37 ns, then for small ones it is already 57 ns.

At the same time, the activation of two large cores and two small ones already leads to the fact that the Core i9-12900K bypasses all previous Intel processors, and even the Ryzen 7 5800X, although the difference there is only 1 point, so it is more correct to talk about parity. Be that as it may, already at this stage it is clear how good Intel’s Golden Cove architecture is, at least for games. Well, four large cores without support for small ones take Intel’s new products to a completely new level. In this form, the Core i9-12900K is almost a quarter faster than its predecessor. And this is with the most efficient video card.

As regards the difference between the three new Intel products, which, we recall, is caused exclusively by the L3 cache in this test mode, it is relatively small.

You can also look at the evolution of Intel and AMD in recent years. In the case of AMD, we see a colossal jump from the top-end FX to the first Ryzen, and then a fairly large increase when switching to Zen 2 and Zen 3. At Intel, everything is much more interesting, because since the days of the Core i7-6700K, performance has practically not increased. And this is logical, since until the Core i9-11900K all these years, Intel actually used the Skylake architecture. But the Core i9-11900K also provided only a very modest increase in performance, albeit almost catching up with Zen 3.

The source sums up its testing by saying that E-cores “suck for gamers.” In addition, because of them, there are problems with DRM protection, which have not yet been fully resolved.
