El Salvador’s default risk has increased significantly due to the fall in the price of Bitcoin

El Salvadors default risk has increased significantly due to the

The sharp decline in the value of most cryptocurrencies in the market has increased the likelihood of a default by El Salvador, writes The Wall Street Journal. The national debt of the country exceeds $24 billion, while the assets of El Salvador, denominated in Bitcoin and amounting to $100 million, fell by a third ($38 million today) before the price decline on the cryptocurrency market. In addition, El Salvador will have to pay $800 million in bonds in January 2023. In early May, Moody’s downgraded El Salvador’s debt rating to Caa3, which means “high risk of default.”

El Salvador's default risk has increased significantly due to the fall in the price of Bitcoin

Salvadoran Finance Minister Alejandro Celaya said that the issuance of Bitcoin bonds was postponed due to the fall in the value of the cryptocurrency. Despite the unstable situation in the crypto market, on May 9, President Nayib Bukele announced the purchase of 500 BTC ($15.3 million at the time of the transaction).

Negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a $1.3 billion loan last year stalled over Bukele’s decision to make Bitcoin legal tender in El Salvador. Both sides are still negotiating to reduce the country’s budget deficit and debt, as well as to minimize the risks associated with the country’s transition to a virtual currency. Earlier this year, the IMF called on El Salvador to strip Bitcoin of its legal tender status due to financial stability risks.

As of March 2022, 14% of businesses in El Salvador used Bitcoin to transact. According to a study by the state-run Chamber of Commerce, more than 90% of companies said that the recognition of Bitcoin as a means of payment did not affect their income in any way. Of the 337 companies surveyed, 71% were classified as small businesses, 13% medium-sized and 16% large.

In February, Nayib Bukele said he would make it easier for crypto investors to obtain citizenship. He added that this step should improve the economic situation in the country.
