‘Pregnant Man’ in iOS 15.4 sparks controversy

Last week, Apple released iOS 15.4 beta, which brought a number of very important updates, but has already caused controversy due to the appearance of the “pregnant man” emoji.

Pregnant emoji are part of the September 2021 Emojipedia update. However, before that, there was no pregnant man in the list of available iOS emojis. Some argue that Apple’s “pregnant man” emoji removes what separates women from men. Others even argue that the move dehumanizes women.

Emojipedia also faced some criticism last September when it first announced emojis for pregnant women and “pregnant men.” Emojipedia later reported on its blog that the new emoji could be used to refer to trans men, non-bisexual or women with short hair, and people who have just finished eating or have a large stomach.

Thus, the “pregnant man” emoji does not necessarily refer to a man with a baby in his stomach. The website Healthline.com reports that those who were born female but later identified as male are “trans men” and can have children. In 2018, at least 22 women who were already documented as men gave birth in Australia.

Apple did not respond to a request for comment regarding the introduction of the “pregnant man” emoji.

Android smartphones will learn to track snoring Google is already

Google is testing a feature for Android that will be responsible for detecting snoring and coughing.

Android smartphones will learn to track snoring. Google is already working on this feature.

Google Health Studies released a new version this week to support the launch of a new study. This update also includes the “Sleep Audio Collection” study, available only to Google employees.

To participate in this study, you must be a Google employee and have an Android phone. The environmental conditions required for this study are that there should be no more than one sleeping adult in the same room who does not work for a competitor company.

Google explains that its Health Sensing team is actively working to bring an enhanced set of sensory capabilities and algorithms to Android devices in order to provide users with meaningful information about their sleep.

These cough and snoring detection algorithms will eventually evolve into a bedside monitoring feature on Android devices that will work privacy-preserving on the device to monitor coughs and snores at night.

By the way, we can recall a similar Snore & Noise Detect function, which was found in the Fitbit software code. It is quite possible that this is the same feature that the same team is working on, just in the case of Fitbit it will be available on the watch, and in the end Google will make it part of Android.
