PlayStation 5 sales drop: only two million consoles sold in the first three months of 2021

In a post on LinkedIn, Chandrashekar Raju, who is the director of engineering at Sony PlayStation, wrote that the company has sold 6.5 million PlayStation 5 to date. Based on the last financial report, as of 31 December 2020, 4.5 million units of PlayStation 5 were sold. But last year this volume was sold, in fact, in a month and a half (sales, we recall, started on November 12), and this has already passed three. It turns out that in half the time, Sony sold half the number of consoles.

Obviously, sales are falling, but not at all due to the fact that demand has fallen: on the contrary, new PS5 batches are scattering in different countries like hot cakes. The problem is in production: TSMC is loaded with orders to the full, but even so, it is not able to provide the output of AMD SoCs – the key components of the PS5 – at a level that would eliminate the shortage.

It is also interesting that the PlayStation 5 was initially sold by Sony at a loss. If the company was going to compensate for it with sales of both consoles and games, then so far this plan is hardly realizable. It is likely that Sony will sell the PlayStation 5 at a loss until the shortage is eliminated. And he, according to forecasts, will last until the third quarter of this year.

Intel introduced Arc Pro A40 and Arc Pro A50 graphics

Everyone is waiting for real gaming graphics cards of the Arc line from Intel, but the company is in no hurry. But today, the range of Intel video cards has been replenished with two discrete models at once – Arc Pro A40 and Arc Pro A50. As the name suggests, they are designed for professional use. However, the characteristics are modest, so this most professional application will be limited.

Intel introduced Arc Pro A40 and Arc Pro A50 graphics cards. But these are not the models that ordinary users and gamers are waiting for.

Both models have 6GB of GDDR6 memory, support real-time ray tracing and AV1 hardware encoding, and feature four Mini DP 1.4 ports. Arc Pro A40 has a peak consumption of 50 W, this card is a single-slot version, Arc Pro A50 is a dual-slot version, and its peak consumption is 75 W. Performance in the first case is 3.5 TFLOPS with single precision, in the second – 4.8 TFLOPS. For comparison, the performance of the old Radeon HD 6970 (it came out at the end of 2010) is 2.7 TFLOPS.

Together with discrete solutions, the Intel Arc Pro A30M mobile GPU is also presented – it is in many ways similar to the Arc Pro A40, only there is less memory (only 4 GB GDDR) and the power consumption level is adjustable – from 35 to 50 watts. The new Intel GPUs will appear in off-the-shelf products later this year.
