Yesterday, October 16, Kotaku published a rather long interview with Phil Spencer, the main gaming division of Microsoft. The journalist discussed various aspects of the new generation consoles with a well-known personality in the video game market, inquired about the company’s plans for exclusives and, of course, asked the most important question about the future of games from Bethesda studio, which was recently acquired by Microsoft along with all subsidiary studios of ZeniMax Media. Many gamers, including the owners of the PlayStation 4 game console, worry that Bethesda will now release new AAA projects exclusively on PC and Xbox. Apparently, their fears were confirmed.
“I don’t want to evade this question and I want to state that this transaction was not at all in order to take away some games from gamers. There is no such clause in the documentation that we have compiled. We want as many people as possible to play games, not vice versa. But to put it bluntly, when I think about where exactly gamers will play and the number of devices we have, and we have xCloud, PC, Game Pass and our base of consoles, I understand that we do not need to launch those games on platforms other than the ones we already support in order for the deal to work for us. Whatever it means, “said Phil Spencer.
Based on this information, as well as the fact that the platforms were never named for the Starfield and The Elder Scrolls 6 projects, it can be assumed that Bethesda really will not release its new games outside the platforms controlled by Microsoft. Thanks to this, the publisher will be able to attract a new audience to their set-top box and subscription services, because franchises are extremely popular with the studio.
Moreover, Phil Spencer said in an interview that it is enough for Microsoft not to sell The Elder Scrolls 6 on a competitor’s console, that is, on the PlayStation 5, for the deal to buy Bethesda to pay off completely. It is worth recalling that ZeniMax Media, which includes Bethesda Game Studios, id Software, Arkane Studios Austin and several smaller developers, was acquired by Microsoft for $ 7.5 billion.
