Tim Cook negotiated a deal with China for $ 275 billion. Therefore, the iPhone became the best-selling smartphone in this country for the first time in six years.

The iPhone recently became the top-selling smartphone in China, the second largest market after the United States, for the first time in six years. The Information says the company owes much to CEO Tim Cook, who laid the foundation by secretly signing a deal worth more than $ 275 billion. The agreement said Apple would contribute to the development of China’s economy through investment, business deals and worker training.

Cook signed a five-year deal with the Chinese in 2016 to stop the regulatory flare-up that the Chinese government threatened Apple with. When the Apple leader came to China in 2016, it was reported that the reason for his visit was to find out why the Chinese government was making it difficult for Apple to work in China. For example, Apple was forced to shut down iBooks and iTunes Movies in the country and lost a lawsuit that prevented it from using the iPhone name on non-smartphone items.

Before Cook met with senior government officials, advocacy groups and members of the Communist Party, Apple’s revenue in China dropped 26%. After the publication of the financial report, the company’s shares fell by 10%. In addition to that, major hedge fund operators called for Cook’s removal, and investor Carl Icahn closed a huge position at Apple with a reported profit of $ 2 billion.

A leaked Apple document confirmed that Cook “personally lobbied officials” in China for Apple Pay, iCloud and the App Store. Cook allegedly signed a 1,250-word “memorandum of understanding” between Apple and China’s National Development and Reform Commission. Apple agreed to make concessions in exchange for some exceptions to the rule.

As part of the agreement, Apple agreed to help the Chinese create the most advanced manufacturing technologies, use more components from Chinese suppliers, sign deals with software firms in the country, make direct investments in Chinese technology companies, work on research with universities in China, train workers in the country, and help in other matters. In exchange for helping the Chinese, Apple received certain perks that other foreign companies could not hope for.

Apple has pledged to spend billions of dollars in the country to build new research centers, retail stores and work on projects based on renewable energy sources. Apple has pledged to spend over $ 275 billion in 10 years. If both parties have no objections, the contract will automatically renew for one more year – until May 2022.

The iPhone assembly line has been shut down for the first time in over a decade, according to Nikkei.
