Panasonic launches app to turn professional cameras into webcams

by Henry Brown

Recently, well-known tech company Panasonic has released its new application for Lumix cameras. This application, despite its release, is still in beta testing status. However, it already allows users to connect their own professional Lumix camera to a macOS or Windows computer and use it as a webcam in popular video conferencing applications like Google Meet along with Zoom.

The purpose of releasing this application is simple – to provide all Lumix owners with an official solution from Panasonic, which can replace the not entirely legal workaround used by many, thanks to which Lumix cameras can be connected and used as a webcam. The main advantage of the official application now is extremely stable operation and a high level of usability. And besides, such a step on the part of Panasonic was also necessary due to the acute shortage of webcams in a variety of stores in the very first months of the global COVID-19 pandemic.

That is why many who did not have the opportunity to purchase full-fledged webcams bought or tried to use the existing full-fledged Lumix cameras as webcams. However, again, not everyone succeeded in doing this, because third-party workarounds were accompanied by a large number of unpleasant nuances and problems. Fortunately, the new “native” application eliminates all the “unnecessary fuss”, and you can download it right now from the official Panasonic website. And by the way, this very application is called Lumix Webcam Software, and to use it, you just need to launch it, connect your camera to a PC via the USB connector and wait for the moment when your camera is displayed in the application.

Nevertheless, unfortunately, it was not without its own nuances, because not all cameras are supported by the Lumix Webcam Software application, at least for now. Here is the entire list of compatible devices: Panasonic LUMIX S1H; Panasonic LUMIX S1R; Panasonic LUMIX S1; Panasonic LUMIX S5; Panasonic LUMIX GH5S; Panasonic LUMIX GH5; Panasonic LUMIX G9, as well as the Panasonic LUMIX G100 will soon get support, but when this will happen is unknown. It is also unknown when exactly the above application will get to its full-fledged release and exit beta status. But even now, Lumix Webcam Software is functioning pretty well, which is very encouraging.
