One of the longest-running studies has shown what a lack of sleep leads to

Many scientists agree that every adult needs at least 7 hours of sleep a day. It is believed that this is how much time the body needs to fully rest and gain strength. However, not everyone has the opportunity to rest for so long. Most people stay up late and wake up early, resulting in less than six hours of sleep. According to scientists, this can have a bad effect on health, and in the long term. In 1985, French scientists began collecting data on the daily routine and health of more than 10,000 UK government officials. They found that many people with regular sleep deprivation have one major brain problem throughout their lives. Sounds like something dangerous, so let’s get into the details.

Why do people stay up late?

Some time ago I wrote about a phenomenon called bed procrastination. Probably, it happened to every person that when they go to bed they disappear for several hours on social networks and YouTube. Sometimes sleep is postponed for so long that only 4-5 hours are left for rest. According to Dr. Rajkumar Dasgupta, people postpone going to bed so that they have more “time to live.” After all, we spend most of the day at work and if we go to bed immediately after coming home, we seem to teleport to the next working day. We have almost no time for entertainment, so we have to sacrifice our sleep. This is most likely one of the most common causes of sleep deprivation among modern people.

However, other common causes of sleep deprivation should not be crossed out. Some people have too tight a work schedule and a lot of household tasks – after a hard day, you need to cook dinner, tidy up the apartment, spend time with your family, and so on. Also, many people suffer from insomnia, which is considered one of the most common sleep disorders.

The Dangers of Lack of Sleep

Scientists are constantly researching the impact of lack of sleep on human health. So our site has a huge number of articles on this topic. Curl your fingers:

  • in 2020, scientists figured out why sleep deprivation leads to death;
  • In 2019, researchers found evidence that regular sleep deprivation is a cause of stroke.
  • in 2018, we talked about Elon Musk’s daily regimen and again came to the conclusion that lack of sleep can cause serious health problems;
  • we also already know that lack of sleep prevents people from losing weight.

At the beginning of the article, I mentioned that in 1985, French scientists began collecting data on the daily routine and health status of more than 10,000 people. It was one of the longest sleep studies ever made. After examining the collected data, scientists noticed that people with regular sleep deprivation are 30% more likely to suffer from dementia. If a person slept less than 6 hours a day during his life, he developed symptoms of senile dementia with age. This is a pretty interesting finding that has the potential to induce many people to normalize their sleep patterns.

What is dementia?

The term dementia is commonly understood as age-related deterioration in the functioning of the human brain. It is not an independent disease, but a process that is often triggered by alcohol abuse and traumatic brain injury. There are no ways to treat brain disorders, that is, if the process has begun, it is impossible to stop the development of forgetfulness and other negative changes. But scientists are trying to minimize the effects of dementia.

But the best thing is to simply avoid the development of dementia. Scientists have suggested many times that this requires leading an active lifestyle and solving as many mental tasks as possible throughout life. Now it turns out that in order to prevent senile dementia, it is very important to get at least 7 hours of sleep a day.

Finally, it would be very interesting to know how many hours a day do you sleep and how you feel? Write in the comments.
