One of Apple’s mixed reality headset prototypes required a small crane, while others ran Windows.

Apple may introduce its mixed reality headset as early as the end of this year or next. But, as you can see from a fresh source report, the company began work on the project back in 2015.

One of Apple's mixed reality headset prototypes required a small crane, while others ran Windows.

Apple planned to release the headset much earlier than 2022-2023, but during the development process, the company encountered a number of problems due to which the release was constantly delayed.

Already in 2016, the team responsible for the project demonstrated very early prototypes to management. There were a certain number of them, and they were quite different from each other. Some were running Windows, some were modified HTC Vive models or some other converted serial products from other companies. One prototype was so heavy that a “little crane” was required to hold it on the head. As a result, the management decided to support the project, although Facebook partially contributed to this process. More specifically, Apple’s concerns about a similar company project.

Technical issues have been a major cause of delays, as has been the case in the past with Apple’s most ambitious new products such as the iPhone. But the Apple smartphone also had an exceptionally powerful figure in Steve Jobs.

While current Apple CEO Tim Cook is backing the headset project, he hasn’t been as active as Jobs in iPhone development, according to five people familiar with the project. For example, according to these people, he rarely visited the project’s development team at its offices away from Apple’s main campus. People say the lack of an authority like Cook, who championed the headset codenamed N301, has at times made it difficult to compete with other products like the Mac and iPhone in terms of staffing and engineering resources.

At the same time, another influential figure in Apple – chief designer Jony Ive – was generally against the project, as he believed that users would not want to wear such a device on their heads for a long time. Also, the Quince team believed that virtual reality separates people. Apparently, this was the reason why the headset eventually evolved from a virtual reality device to a mixed reality headset.

In addition, the project team came up with one curious detail: to equip the headset with an external screen. It was supposed to display an image from the internal camera of the device. Thus, people around the user could see his eyes. For a long time, only a few people knew about this feature of the product under development.

The authors of the article also say that they will later talk about a turning point in the development of the device, which took place in 2019. Presumably, the point is that then Ive decided to abandon the project, which provided for the headset to have a separate external unit with a computing platform. Instead, it was decided to opt for a less productive, but more independent device.

XTwitter Elon Musk is the largest source of fake news

Social network X, formerly known as Twitter, is the largest source of fake news, as stated by Vice-President of the European Commission Vera Jurova.

Social network X has not signed up to the pan-European code of conduct to combat fake news in social networks and advertising campaigns. At the same time, according to Zhurova, social network X “has the highest ratio of unreliable/disinformation posts.”

The code of conduct is a set of regulatory standards to allow companies such as Google, TikTok, Microsoft and Meta to do more to combat fake news across the 27-member bloc. It was built on an earlier version published in 2018.

“A hard law comes with obligations, so my message on Twitter is: ‘You have to follow a hard law and we will watch what you do,'” she said. The code underpins the Digital Services Act, which sets out strict content moderation rules.

With parliamentary elections in Slovakia scheduled for September 30 and presidential elections in Poland on October 15, it was important for platforms to address the risks of online interference, she added.

As users have noticed, when opening the Maps application in Windows 11, a message appears: “By the end of 2023, offline maps will no longer be available in the Maps application.” After this date, you will not be able to view offline maps in the application.

The decision to end support is most likely due to the expiration of the agreement between Nokia, its Here brand and Microsoft.

Microsoft acquired Nokia’s mapping and navigation business (Here) in 2015, and since then both companies have been working together to create offline maps for Windows.

The biggest Windows 11 update not only new features but

Yesterday, Microsoft released the biggest update since the existence of the Windows 11 operating system. As users discovered, along with the Windows 11 23H2 (or Moment 4) update, one useful feature disappeared from the OS.

New “Explorer”

We are talking about the possibility of “drag and drop”. As Mayank Parmar, owner of the WindowsLatest topic resource, humorously complains, new Microsoft developers clearly don’t like the drag-and-drop feature or don’t understand its importance.

When Windows 11 first came out, users couldn’t drag and drop items onto the taskbar like they were used to. The option was returned a year later in the Windows 11 22H2 update. Microsoft “celebrated” the option as a completely new feature, although it was familiar to many different versions of Windows. And it looks like history will repeat itself.

Drag and drop works until Windows 11 23H2 update

Windows 11 23H2 introduces Explorer with a redesigned design, recommendations, and a new address bar that’s deeply integrated with OneDrive cloud storage. Microsoft support explains:

Explorer’s newly designed address bar recognizes local and cloud folders. It also shows the status of the file. For Microsoft OneDrive users, the address bar now includes OneDrive sync status and a storage limits pop-up window.

Drag and drop no longer works after Windows 11 23H2 update

This is all well and good, but with the new address bar you can no longer drag and drop files or apps. For example, if you have two folders on your computer and you want to move a file from one to the other. Previously, when dragging, the “Move to…” mark appeared, but now it is gone, and the entire function does not work. Here is one typical complaint:

Removing this feature from the address bar has disrupted my workflow many times lately.

A Microsoft representative said that the company is aware of these changes, but that no decision has been made in this regard. The company reported:

This [перетаскивание] is not currently supported by the updated address bar… we will continue to monitor feedback.
