The range of Acer has expanded with a new mobile computer running Chrome OS. The novelty is called the Chromebook 514, and should not be confused with … the previous Chromebook 514: those models came out a few years ago and were based on Intel Celeron N3350 and N4200 processors, while the newest Chromebook 514 (part number – CB514-H / T) uses a single-chip MediaTek Kompanio 828 platform.

The mobile computer is 16.7 mm thick and weighs 1.3 kg. The hardware platform is cooled using passive elements, so the device works silently, and the autonomy, according to the developers, should be enough for a day of work.

New iPads, MacBooks and iPhones will be less likely to be scratched: they will receive titanium alloy cases

Published

on

As it became known, Apple plans to use titanium alloys for the manufacture of iPad cases. In the future, MacBook and iPhone may also get titanium alloy cases.

Compared to stainless steel, titanium alloys are harder and more resistant to scratches. However, the strength of titanium also makes etching difficult. Therefore, Apple has developed a sandblasting, etching and chemical process that can give the titanium shell a glossy finish, making it more attractive. Apple is also exploring the possibility of using thin oxide coatings on surfaces to address fingerprint issues.

This material will appear for the first time in the new generation iPad. The reason the company has no plans to use it on the iPad Pro yet is because the device supports wireless charging. If this material will be used with the iPhone, it will most likely only be in the central metal frame. The back of this device will remain glass without affecting wireless charging.

Earlier it was reported that the production of iPads over the past two months has been reduced by 50% compared to the original plan for the iPhone 13. Moreover, even the components that were originally intended for older iPhone models are now used for the iPhone 13.

The 2021 MacBook Pro has big memory card issues. Apple is silent for now

Published

One of the key features of the 2021 MacBook Pro is the return of the SD card slot. However, new laptop users are now complaining about problems with the SD card reader.

In particular, users have reported very slow transfer rates and inaccessible files. As noted by MacRumors, numerous reviews confirm a serious issue on the new 14- and 16-inch 2021 MacBook Pro models.

One 14 ” MacBook Pro user with M1 Pro chip writes that it takes the laptop about 1 minute to recognize the SD card and an error message pops up from time to time. Another user says Finder crashes when Mac tries to read SD card.

This is very unpleasant. I was hoping that importing from an SD card, including image previews, would be fast on my new 14-inch MacBook Pro. I have a fairly new 64GB SD card that worked fine. But it takes a few minutes to display photos on MacBook Pro via SD card slot and sometimes crashes halfway. Sometimes Finder crashes too.

Another user notes that formatting the SD card through the MacBook Pro does not solve the problem in most cases. Some users also confirm that the same SD card works fine when using a USB-C adapter.

The only thing that is stable is that if the card works, it always works, and if the card doesn’t work properly, it never works. Reformatting even to all other possible formats does not work. Sandisk, Sony, Samsung, 16GB, 32GB, 64GB, 128GB, 256GB, UHS-I, UHS-II, micro-SD, FAT32, exFAT, no difference. 100% of my maps work fine through an adapter.

At this point, Apple has yet to officially acknowledge this issue. It is not yet known if this is a simple software bug or a hardware issue.

MacBook Pro spontaneously caught fire in sleep mode, owner got burns

Published

Recently there was information that the owner of the Apple MacBook Pro received minor injuries when the battery of his laptop spontaneously caught fire. This post is about a 2015 MacBook Pro.

This model has been banned by some airlines as its battery is considered potentially hazardous. Reddit user Squeezieful has confirmed that he suffered minor hand burns while pulling the burning laptop out from under the bed. If he had not noticed the fire, the consequences could have been much more dire.

According to the user, the MacBook Pro was in sleep mode under the bed and was not charging. At some point, he woke up from the smell of molten plastic. In addition to burns to his hands, the laptop owner escaped with only a damaged carpet.

Back in 2015, Apple recalled its 15-inch MacBook Pro laptops that were on sale between September 2015 and February 2016. The owner could be blamed for using a potentially dangerous device. However, Squeezieful claims that its laptop was already in a service center and serviced as part of this recall campaign.
