OmniVision OV40A 40MP Image Sensor Designed for Smartphones

OmniVision Technologies announced the release of the OV40A image sensor with built-in sensitivity enhancement and noise reduction. The sensor with a resolution of 40 megapixels is designed for cameras built into smartphones. It has an optical format of 1 / 1.7 inches and a pixel size of 1.0 microns.

The manufacturer considers the advantages of the sensor to support several HDR options, the ability to obtain a slow motion effect by shooting 1080p video at up to 240 fps and support for phase autofocus.

The sensor uses the proprietary PureCel Plus-S technology, built on a three-dimensional arrangement of crystals with a photosensitive matrix and processing circuits that provide hardware debayering, which makes it possible to display images in full resolution in real time. When shooting in low light conditions, binning can be used to quadruple light sensitivity at the cost of reducing the resolution to 10MP. The sensor can output video with a resolution of 40 megapixels at a frame rate of 30 fps, 10 megapixels (with x4 binning) at a frequency of 120 fps, 4K2K at a rate of 60 fps and 1080p at a rate of 240 fps.
