The European Space Agency will soon get its hands on a completely new processor for the industry. The open source development is called Occamy.

Occamy is a processor based on the RISC-V architecture with an unusually large number of cores for a space solution, and even in a chiplet version.

There are two chips. Each contains 216 cores, for a total of 432. In addition, each chiplet has its own 16 GB HBM2e memory stack. This is also quite atypical for space CPUs.

From the rest, we know about the presence of 64-bit modules for floating-point matrix calculations. The processor is manufactured according to the standards of 12 nm and consists of approximately 1 billion transistors. Performance (FP64) reaches 0.75 TFLOPS, and in FP8 mode we are talking about 6 TFLOPS. The die area of ​​one chiplet is 73 mm2TDP is not reported, but the processor does not require active cooling.

Unfortunately, ESA has not yet said anything about the prospects for using such a processor in future space missions. But, if this CPU is eventually approved, the first spacecraft with it will obviously not appear soon, since it takes years to develop space missions.
