“Obviously we will have to comply, we have no choice.” Apple’s chief marketer confirms iPhone’s Lightning replacement with USB-C, but Apple isn’t happy with it

The EU requires all phones sold in the Old World to use a USB-C port by 2024. Most manufacturers are already using it, the stumbling block is Apple. And now a company representative has officially confirmed the transfer of future iPhones to USB-C.

“Obviously we will have to comply, we have no choice.” Apple's chief marketer confirms iPhone's Lightning replacement with USB-C, but Apple isn't happy with it

When asked by The Wall Street Journal’s Joanna Stern about whether the company would replace the iPhone’s Lighting port, Apple chief marketing officer Greg Joswiak replied: “Obviously we’ll have to comply, we have no choice“.

When asked by Stern about when USB-C will appear in the iPhone. Joswiak replied that “the Europeans are dictating the terms for European clients”. The law currently mandates that all mobile phones and tablets will be required to use USB-C by “fall 2024”. Joswiak declined to say if phones sold outside the EU will have a USB-C port, but they likely will: making the same models with different ports for different markets is hardly economically viable.

Joswiak made it very clear in his interview that Apple is unhappy with the legal enforcement of the switch from Lightning to USB-C. He also doubted that the widespread transition to USB-C will lead to a decrease in “electronic waste”.

Personally, I do not find this argument convincing; I have to replace most of my Lightning cables every few years anyway, about the same frequency I buy new phones because they wear out or cats gnaw on them,” Apple’s chief marketing officer said.
