NVIDIA changed its mind: RTX 3080 20GB and RTX 3070 16GB graphics cards canceled

On October 29, the RTX 3070 video card will be released on a stripped-down version of the GPU GA104-300 with 5888 CUDA cores and 8 GB of GDDR6 memory. Following in December, RTX 3080 and RTX 3070 video cards were expected with doubled memory capacities – 20 and 16 GB, respectively. This was perceived as an already confirmed fact. However, new data indicates that NVIDIA has completely canceled the release of the RTX 3080 20GB and RTX 3070 16GB by sending notifications to its AIB partners. This is reported by the profile web resource Videocardz with reference to two independent sources.

The RTX 3080 20GB and RTX 3070 16GB graphics cards were supposed to be the answer to the Radeon RX 6900 XT and RX 6800 XT equipped with a 16GB GDDR6 video buffer. As a reminder, the RX 6000 (Navi 2X) series of video cards with the 2nd generation RDNA architecture will debut on October 28.

NVIDIA changed its mind: RTX 3080 20GB and RTX 3070 16GB graphics cards canceled

It is not known for certain why NVIDIA dropped the RTX 3080 20GB and the RTX 3070 16GB. There are only assumptions. The most likely reason for the cancellation of the GeForce RTX 3080 20GB is the insufficiently high release volumes of GDDR6X memory. As for the GeForce RTX 3070 16 GB with less-speed GDDR6 memory, which is now not in short supply (its mass production was mastered two years ago), it is assumed that the manufacturer simply decided not to upset the owners of the GeForce RTX 3080 10 GB.

It remains to recall that even earlier, NVIDIA excluded from the original plans the GeForce RTX 3070 Ti with a full GA104 core and a 16 GB GDDR6 buffer. At the same time, the RTX 3060 Ti is still in the plans – its announcement should take place in mid-November 2020.

In the meantime, the recently released RTX 3080 and RTX 3090 remain in short supply, which will remain at least until 2021, and the RTX 3070, judging by the latest reports, will face the same fate.

Not so long ago, there was also information that NVIDIA intends to transfer part of the orders for the production of video cards of the Ampere family to TSMC. As you know, now the GPU for the RTX 3080, 3090 and 3070 is manufactured by Samsung.
