Now new laptops can become scarce and expensive goods. Due to the outbreak of COVID-19 and a number of other factors, the situation in this market has worsened

Schenker, known for its XMG-branded notebooks, claims that mobile PCs with new Intel and AMD processors, as well as new Nvidia graphics cards, may be delayed and significantly more expensive.

The company says that this year, unlike last year, the shortage of components could hit the notebook market hard. It’s all because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Now new laptops can become scarce and expensive goods. Due to the outbreak of COVID-19 and a number of other factors, the situation in this market has worsened

More specifically, according to the company, the Chinese authorities responded to the outbreak of the Omicron strain in the Suzhou industrial park with a partial lockdown. The current measures affect factories such as Bosch, semiconductor manufacturer United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) and Samsung. The authorities have already ordered other manufacturing plants to temporarily close and called for. Suzhou is one of the country’s high-tech development centers and is where the factories of XMG’s ODM partners, Uniwill and Clevo are located.

But that’s not all. The company notes that even already-produced components and laptops are often delivered to the next factory or country for sale with a long delay due to the increasing restrictions of transport systems. Logistics companies are already running at full capacity, further increasing shipping costs and making next-gen laptops noticeably more expensive. This increase is in addition to higher purchase prices for individual components, basic materials and raw materials.

At the moment, we receive daily updates from our partners and suppliers regarding the postponement of delivery dates. While we were able to introduce our new XMG NEO 15 (E22) liquid cooled OASIS earlier in the year and still expect it to be available from mid-March, other laptops such as the new XMG FUSION 16 or the updated XMG PRO series with Intel Core processors The 12th generation is still pending. It is not clear at the moment when they will be available, and at what price, because the growing shortage of components and rising logistics costs make early costing and planning difficult.

The company also recalls the problem with SSDs, which will also become more expensive due to the recent situation. As a reminder, Western Digital and Kioxia recently announced contamination that resulted in the loss of at least 6.5 EB of memory.

India will defer license requirements for importing laptops and tablets, two government officials said. Industry and the US government have previously complained about the move, which could hit Apple, Samsung and other companies.

The plan will be delayed for a year, after which the government will consider introducing a licensing regime, one of the officials, who requested anonymity, told Reuters.

The licensing regime, announced abruptly on August 3, was aimed at “ensuring trusted equipment and systems” enter India, reduce dependence on imports, boost local manufacturing and partially address the country’s trade imbalance with China. But due to industry objections, the original plan was quickly delayed by about three months.

Last month, US trade chief Katherine Tai expressed India’s concerns about the move, which would also affect companies such as Dell and HP. India’s Ministry of Electronics is now proposing to simplify the import registration process, which is set to begin in November.

The new “import management system” will require companies to obtain “certificates of registration” to import laptops, tablets and personal computers, instead of the licenses previously proposed by the August 3 order.

India’s electronics imports, including laptops, tablets and personal computers, totaled $19.7 billion between April and June, up 6.25% year-on-year.
