Notebooks will be shipped 10-15% less this quarter than last quarter

Notebook manufacturers operating on ODM terms typically see a significant decrease in orders in the first quarter compared to the fourth quarter of the prior year. This seasonal pattern is evident not only in the notebook market and is explained by the fact that the last quarter of the year has traditionally seen the highest level of sales.

According to a source citing industry representatives, the current quarter is also expected to decline from the previous quarter, but this year it will be less pronounced than usual. More specifically, industry sources expect laptop shipments in the first quarter of 2021 to be 10-15% lower than in the fourth quarter of 2020. For comparison: in previous years there was a decrease of more than 20%.

Global demand for PCs, including laptops, has skyrocketed in 2020 as the pandemic has pushed millions of people to work remotely and study. According to the estimates of the analytical company Strategy Analytics, 69.7 million mobile computers were sold in the fourth quarter alone, which is 54% more than in the same period in 2019. For the entire 2020, 226.8 million laptops were sold.
