Not the first month: mandatory Windows 11 updates significantly slow down the speed of the PC

Microsoft regularly updates Windows 11 PCs, and not all of these updates can be opted out. Beginning in March 2023, users who installed the monthly mandatory updates began experiencing slowdowns in their computers, including longer boot times and slower SSDs.

Complaints about the problem appeared on forums, social networks, Microsoft support and other online platforms. It is noted that the PC may run slower when you are trying to perform SSD-intensive tasks, such as copying large files from one place to another or playing a large game.

Some users have reported a drastic drop in SSD speed from 7000MB/s to 3000MB/s, and in special cases down to 1000MB/s.

The problems started with the launch of the March update KB5023778, and they are also observed in the most recent, mandatory June update KB5027231. As noted by WindowsLatest thematic resource, which conducted its own investigation, the problem will be present in the upcoming traditional July “update on Tuesdays” (Patch Tuesday), as it remains unresolved in the optional June 2023 update (numbered KB5027303).

Uninstalling updates starting with the March 2023 Patch Tuesday restores the SSD speed to its previous 7000 MB/s. This means that the problem may be directly related to the latest updates.

You cant get rid of it you can only hide

Like it or not, the Windows Backup app installed in Windows 10 and Windows 11 is here to stay, with Microsoft calling it a “system component” that can’t be removed.

Users who did not have the application installed began receiving it automatically on August 22, 2023. The Windows Backup app has become a must-have for all Windows 10 and Windows 11 users, even those who can’t actually use it.

You can’t get rid of it, you can only hide it: Microsoft imposes controversial Windows Backup on users

Because Windows Backup requires a Microsoft account, Azure Active Directory (AAD) and (Active Directory) AD users cannot use the application to back up their data.

Windows Backup saves specific files and folders, as well as settings, account information, and applications. All this information is stored in the cloud, so the device can be easily restored by connecting to the Internet. An additional problem is that using Windows Backup can quickly require you to upgrade to a more expensive Microsoft cloud storage plan.

In response to negative reviews, Microsoft stated that “because Windows Backup is a system component, it cannot be removed.” However, the company has promised to release an update to prevent the app from appearing in the interface, specifically on Windows 10 Pro, Education and Enterprise editions, as well as Windows 11 that use AAD and AD. Simply put, the application will continue to be present in the system, but will be hidden and no longer noticeable.

Windows 11s share on Steam has fallen but not for

Microsoft’s latest operating system is quite popular among gamers. However, according to recent statistics published by Valve on the digital distribution platform Steam, the popularity of Windows 11 is declining.

Windows 10 has recovered from falling below 56% in August 2023. Microsoft’s not-so-new operating system now holds nearly 57.97%, up 1.99 percentage points from the previous month.

At the same time, the share of Windows 11 fell from 39.22% in August to 37.43%. Windows 11 and 10 together account for more than 95% of all Steam users. However, the situation will soon change, as Valve plans to stop supporting OS versions released before Windows 10 in January 2024. This step will be taken due to the recent end of support for Chromium in Windows 7 and 8.

So, the full rating looks like this:

  • Windows 10 64-bit – 57.97%
  • Windows 11 – 37.43%
  • Windows 7 64-bit – 1.23%
  • Windows 8.1 64-bit – 0.18%
  • Windows 7 32-bit – 0.06%

The market shares of other operating systems on Steam are similar to Windows 7. 1.43% use macOS and 1.63% use Linux.
