No one else has this: the Fairphone 5 smartphone designer is presented with ten years of support
Fairphone has officially unveiled the fifth generation of its modular smartphones. The Fairphone 5 debuted almost 2 years after the launch of the Fairphone 4 and brings quite a few improvements.
One of the biggest features of the Fairphone 5 is the updated software update policy. The Fairphone 4 was promised a 5-year warranty, two major Android updates, and software support until the end of 2025. The Fairphone 5 is also promised a 5-year warranty, but software support will be even more impressive with five major Android updates after Android 13 and 8 years of security updates. Moreover, Fairphone announced serious plans to expand support from 8 to 10 years – until 2033.
Fairphone claims that this commitment to software updates was made possible by the choice of a hardware platform, the Qualcomm QCM6490 SoC, designed for industrial applications. In terms of performance, this SoC also represents a step up from the Snapdragon 750G in the Fairphone 4.
The Fairphone 5 retains its modular design. The new phone is divided into ten modules that can be replaced separately from each other. Users can purchase these modules through the Fairphone website or distribution partners. For example, microSD card slot, SIM card slot, camera slot, and so on.
Key specs include 6.46-inch 90Hz 2770 x 1224 pixel OLED screen, Corning Gorilla Glass 5, 50MP front-facing camera, 50MP OIS main camera and 50MP Ultra Wide Angle, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB internal flash memory, 4200 mAh removable battery with support for 30 W wired charging, Android 13 operating system, Bluetooth 5.2 and Wi-Fi 6E, support for two SIM cards (nano-SIM and eSIM ), two speakers, moisture protection (IP55), NFC, side fingerprint scanner.
The recommended retail price of the Fairphone 5 is 699 euros. It’s available for pre-order in Sky Blue, Matte Black, and also comes with a clear panel.

Using the Honor V Purse “smartphone-clutch” as a clutch can be potentially very expensive. Prices for device repairs revealed

The “smartphone-clutch” Honor V Purse, despite its positioning as a fashion accessory and form factor, is priced at not the most $825 for the basic version. Considering the same form factor and positioning, it would be useful to know that screen repair will cost the owner almost 70% of the cost of the smartphone.
As it became known, Honor will charge about $558 for screen repair. This is the price in China at the current exchange rate. It will also be very expensive to replace the motherboard: $274 or $342 depending on the configuration. Of course, this includes the platform, RAM and flash memory, since all this is soldered on the board.
Everything else will not be very expensive to replace:
- Battery (main) – 159 yuan ($22)
- Battery (auxiliary) – 159 yuan ($22)
- Back cover – 239 yuan ($33)
- Front camera (main) – 139 yuan ($19)
- Rear camera (wide angle) – 149 yuan ($20)
- Rear camera (main) – 379 yuan ($52)
Considering that this is a “smartphone-clutch”, it will be much easier to damage the screen of such a device than a regular smartphone that is constantly carried in a pocket or bag. And the prices for repairs indicate that it is better to be careful.

These Samsung smartphones were created specifically for the US military. Galaxy S23 Tactical Edition and XCover6 Pro Tactical Edition presented

Samsung has fully presented the new generation of secure Tactical Edition smartphones. These are the Samsung Galaxy S23 Tactical Edition and XCover6 Pro Tactical Edition models.
They were first presented back in May, but then Samsung partially revealed the characteristics and did not even show the device. Third-party images showed a generally ordinary Galaxy S23 and XCover6 Pro. As you can see in the latest images, there is little that is usual in terms of design in the new products. However, the external “armor” is removable.
The outer protective shell of both devices is much more impressive than that of most “professional” rugged smartphones. And all because the Tactical Edition line is aimed primarily not at ordinary consumers, but at the military. To create such devices, Samsung cooperates with the US Department of Defense.
From the point of view of characteristics typical for smartphones, these models are completely identical to their civilian counterparts. All features revolve around protection.
The Galaxy S23 Tactical Edition and XCover6 Pro Tactical Edition come pre-configured with software and custom drivers to support tactical radio protocols and mission-specific devices, including access to drone data and laser rangefinder information. They can also be connected to secure tactical communications systems and use a stealth mode that disables LTE and e-911 by disabling all RF transmissions (including GPS) in hardware. This ensures that communications are secure and completely disconnected from the network.
In particular, the devices are pre-installed with the ATAK (Android Team Awareness Kit, which provides precise targeting, reconnaissance, navigation during military operations and data exchange) and BATDOK (Battlefield Assisted Trauma Distributed Observation Kit, which tracks in real time monitoring the vital signs of an injured soldier – it simplifies the work of a physician when providing emergency care).
The software defined radio interface has the ability to receive data from a third party SDR receiver such as Flight Aware or other third party frequency band specific radios. There’s also an auto-answer feature for hands-free calls and the ability to record and prevent outgoing calls, which Samsung says is useful in hostage negotiations.
The outer protective shell consists of an Armor Aluminum frame and a durable military-grade case. This is just a case, and the smartphone can be taken out of it. Actually, then all the features of the devices will be reduced to unique software.

YouTube developers have released a TikTok-style video editor for smartphones

The YouTube video platform team has introduced a new application called YouTube Create, which allows you to edit videos directly on your phone.
The new app aims to encourage more people to create YouTube Shorts, a TikTok-style video offered by YouTube. It’s generally easier to make a TikTok video than a full YouTube video. The creation of a separate app also follows TikTok’s strategy of releasing a separate (and popular) app called CapCut, which helps create videos for TikTok and other platforms.
The app offers tools such as precision editing and trimming, automatic subtitles, voiceover capabilities, and access to a library of filters, effects, transitions, and royalty-free music.
The YouTube Create app will soon be available as a free beta download for Android in countries including the US, Germany, France, UK, Indonesia, India, Korea and Singapore. An iOS version is planned for release next year.
