New Android feature notifies of doorbell ringing and other important sounds

Google announced the introduction of a new feature in Android called Sound Notifications, which allows people who are hard of hearing or deaf to know about critical everyday sounds around them. Having recognized them, the option informs the user about it using a push notification, flash or vibration.

According to the developers’ assurances, “Sound notifications” work autonomously exclusively on the user’s device. At the moment, the option is able to recognize 10 different types of sounds:

  • smoke and fire alarms;
  • sirens;
  • sounds of children;
  • doorbells;
  • knock;
  • barking dogs;
  • beeping electrical appliances;
  • water flow;
  • landline phone call.

“Sound notifications” are available not only on smartphones running Android, but also on watches running wearOS.

The new function maintains a graph of recognized sounds available to the user, displaying their time and type. For example, thanks to him, you can understand that the dog began to bark because of the siren.

Apparently, at the moment, “Sound notifications” are natively available only on Pixel smartphones with Android 11. To activate them, you need to go to “Settings” and in the “Accessibility” section select the appropriate item. However, this function can also be acquired on other smartphones by downloading the official application.
