NASA launches Ingenuity helicopter on its first flight to Mars: how to watch the broadcast

Published

on

NASA’s Aeronautics and Space Administration has completed all the necessary preparatory work and launched an Ingenuity helicopter on Mars this morning, April 19, on its maiden flight.

And although the launch has already taken place, information about how the flight took place has reached Earth only now and in the near future NASA will begin to broadcast live:

The craft should rise 10 feet (3 meters) above the surface and hover in place for 30 seconds, while the rover’s cameras capture the historic attempt from a long distance.

Recall that the helicopter was delivered to Mars, attached to the bottom of the Perseverance rover. Ingenuity’s main focus is to demonstrate technology and test the first flights to Mars. The $ 85 million helicopter is a very small structure weighing 1.8 kg.

It was originally planned that the first flight will take place on April 11, but then the event was postponed as engineers worked on pre-flight checks and a solution to the software problem.

If today’s flight is successful, Ingenuity will make a series of longer flights over Jezero Crater, where Perseverance landed on February 18, 2021. The rover will provide support during flights, capturing images, collecting environmental data, and locating a base station that allows the helicopter to communicate with mission controllers on Earth.

Perseverance is intended for exploration in the Jezero crater area. The rover has rather ambitious tasks in collecting samples, looking for signs of past microbial life, assessing viability and preparing for the landing of humans on Mars.

Google is preparing to introduce an innovation that will delight many users of the mobile version of the proprietary Chrome browser.

We are talking about the ability to remove the Discover ribbon (Recommendations) from the Chrome New Tab page. On mobile versions of the Google Chrome browser, the new tab page currently hosts a search bar, most viewed websites, and two content feeds. One of them is the traditional Google Discover channel (Google Recommendations), which shows a list of articles recommended for the user by Google algorithms.

You can turn off

Before and after

Soon, the browser should be able to remove this feed – using a special flag #feed-ablation, which will appear on the chrome://flags page. It’s already available in an early test build of Chrome Canary, and is expected to be released with the release of stable Chrome 103 next month.

Google TV finally has support for user profiles

Recall that Google TV is not an independent operating system and not renamed Android TV, but an additional shell for Android TV. It debuted on the Chromecast media player in October 2020. Since launch, Google TV users have been complaining about the lack of full support for multiple profiles on the device. The feature was announced in October last year and was scheduled to begin rolling out to devices by the end of the year. However, two months later, Google delayed the launch indefinitely.

Now Google has announced the start of rolling out support for multiple profiles on the same device with Google TV. The feature will not appear instantly for all users, but gradually over the next few weeks.

It will allow you to create a personalized space on one TV for several users with different Google accounts. Each of them can access personalized recommendations, quick access to their watch list, and so on.
