Microsoft will disable all downloadable macros in Excel, Word and other Office applications

Microsoft has announced a significant change to its security policy. Soon, VBA (Visual basic for Applications) macros in the documents of the five most popular Office applications will be blocked by default.

Users will no longer be able to run any VBA macros in Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Visio for “untrusted” documents that are downloadable from the web and contain macros. As such, Office users will no longer be able to enable certain content with a simple click of a button.

Any files shared from outside the corporate network will be considered “untrusted”. At the same time, all files coming from the same domain must still be able to work with macros.

The change will go into effect in early April 2022 with the release of Microsoft Office version 2203 preview.

This step is taken for the security of both corporate and ordinary users of Office – hackers have been attacking Office users for years using malicious macros. Microsoft used to issue a warning, but that didn’t help much. Now, instead of a warning, a security threat banner will appear with a link to a Microsoft support article that does not offer an easy way to activate the macro.

Microsoft continues to develop the idea of combining Windows and Android. Recently, the company announced the release of an update to the Windows Subsystem for Android subsystem for its current OS.

Even Windows 11 has already been updated to Android 12.1. Microsoft has updated the subsystem Windows Subsystem for Android

One of the main innovations is the transition to Android 12.1 (12L). The current public version is based on Android 11. Initially, the update is only available through the Dev Channel. When it will become available to everyone is still unclear.

Microsoft notes that updating to Android 12.1 may result in some apps not running. She does not specify which ones, but it probably refers to some old programs.

The update also strengthens the integration of Android into Windows. For example, pop-up messages are first displayed as Windows notifications. The taskbar now shows if an Android app is accessing your microphone or location.

The company also states that Android apps should work better after waking the computer from standby. Instead of restarting, they should just resume where they left off.
