Microsoft has begun getting rid of another veteran application in its proprietary operating system. The company has released a new test build of Windows 11 Canary, which does not include the WordPad text editor.

Microsoft has called WordPad a “legacy feature,” indicating that it is no longer in development and therefore will not be included in future releases of Windows 11. The Windows 11 Canary build is available to download only for members of the Windows Insiders testing program, but reflects upcoming changes that will soon become available to all users.

The developer note states:

Starting with this build, the WordPad and People apps will no longer install on a clean OS installation. In a future version, WordPad will be removed when updated. WordPad cannot be reinstalled. WordPad is a legacy Windows feature.

Let’s remember that 28 years ago Microsoft announced WordPad as the successor to a text editor called Microsoft Write. WordPad became available as part of Windows 95, Microsoft’s newest operating system at the time. Since then, WordPad has been present in every version of Windows, providing users with basic text editing capabilities, supporting RTF, DOC, ODT and other popular formats.

Microsoft now recommends using a different text editor. Microsoft stated:

We recommend Microsoft Word for rich text documents such as .doc and .rtf, and Notepad for plain text documents such as .txt.

The biggest update since the first iPhone iOS 18 will

Perhaps the iPhone 16 line of smartphones no longer looks like something noticeably new, but iOS 18, according to recent data, will definitely be very different from the previous version.

The biggest update since the first iPhone? iOS 18 will bring a huge number of changes and new features

The new version of iOS, which Apple will unveil at the WWDC 2024 event in the summer, may be the biggest iOS update in the history of the operating system since the release of the first iPhone.

I’m told the new operating system is being viewed internally as one of the biggest iOS updates—if not the biggest—in the company’s history

Mark Gurman

Well-known insider and Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman did not share details, but they will clearly appear in the near future. At the same time, we previously heard that iOS 18 may finally include AI-related features, a new version of Siri, and much more.

Learn Microsoft the Windows 11 build has been shrinked to

NTDEV, a team of enthusiasts best known for their modification of Windows 11 called Tiny11, has taken their achievements in miniaturizing the Microsoft OS to the next level by moving the operating system to text mode.

Learn, Microsoft: the Windows 11 build has been “shrinked” to an extreme 100 MB, the OS works in multitasking mode

The resulting installation image was just 100MB in size, making it likely the smallest Windows 11 ISO ever.

Naturally, since this is a text mode, many of the features are stripped down compared to the regular (or Tiny11) Windows 11 GUI. What’s particularly impressive is that even after removing all the graphics components and apps built into Windows 11, NTDEV kept the OS working and functional.

According to the developer, users can perform multiple tasks simultaneously on this text-based OS. After installation, all Windows 11 directories take up about 1.91 GB. In stripped-down Windows, there are only four folders (and at least one hidden folder, judging by the commands used in the video). By comparison, installing Windows 11 requires at least 64 GB of disk space.

NTDEV also points out the disadvantages of this text-based variation of Windows 11. For example, the operating system is quite slow, despite the removal of the graphical interface and many of its functions.

In February 2023, NTDEV introduced a lightweight version of Windows 11 Pro 22H2, which required 2 GB of RAM and 8 GB of storage space to operate. The October release of Tiny11 requires just over 3 GB to install.

Order in the gallery stacks of Google Photos have reached

Google has begun distributing a new Google Photos feature called Photo Stack to devices running the Android operating system. Initially, the innovation debuted at the end of 2023 on iOS.

The Photo Stack feature groups similar photos together to organize a user’s photo feed. However, this combination of files does not change the amount of available space in the storage.

As a result, the user can see the best photos for each stack in the “Photos” section. The developers explained:

Click on a photo stack and use the ribbon at the bottom to scroll through the files in it. To view other photos not in the stack, swipe left or right. You can also switch to grid view mode to perform actions on multiple files at once.
