Meta claims its new AI supercomputer will be the fastest in the world
Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, said its research team has developed a new artificial intelligence supercomputer that is said to be the fastest in the world when completed in mid-2022.
Meta says the AI Research SuperCluster (RSC) computer will help the company build better AI models that can learn from trillions of examples, work in hundreds of languages, and analyze text, images, and videos together to determine if content is harmful.
“This research will help keep people safe when using our services, not only today, but also in the future, as we create a metaverse,” the company said in a statement.
Last October, the social media giant changed its name to Meta to reflect its focus on the metaverse it believes will be the successor to the mobile internet.
The term “metaverse” refers to the idea of shared virtual environments that people can access from different devices and where they can work, play and communicate.
The RSC was developed by Nvidia, Pure Storage and Penguin Computing.

Alfa-Bank disables outdated iPhone app from May 27

The Alfa-Bank team began to warn users of the mobile application on the iOS platform about the upcoming shutdown of outdated versions.
As reported in the Alfa-Bank application, it will stop working from May 27, 2022. We are talking about application users who did not have time to upgrade to version 12.13 and higher. Now the update will no longer work, because the application has been removed from the App Store.
The explanation says the following:
Your version of the app is out of date and you can’t update it yet. Manage money in Alfa-Online – just like in the application.
According to representatives of Alfa-Bank, the notification was sent to “a small part of customers who did not have time to upgrade.” Version 12.13 and later will continue to work correctly.
Recall that the Alfa-Bank application was removed from Google Play and the App Store due to sanctions in April 2022.

Engineers came up with a way to increase the cooling efficiency of processors by 700%

US engineers have come up with a new way to cool semiconductor products, which does not involve the use of a thermal interface. Conformal coating in laboratory conditions has demonstrated its high efficiency in comparison with traditional methods of heat removal.
Electronic devices heat up during operation, and the greater the power, the stronger the heating, all other things being equal. This problem is especially acute with the miniaturization of devices. Researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have come up with a new efficient way to remove heat from semiconductor products.
Usually, a radiator is connected to the hottest places of the microcircuit through a thermal interface. For example, thermal paste. Instead, American scientists proposed to cover the entire device with a thin layer of polymer insulator, and “fill” it with a layer of copper on top, completely repeating the shape of the device. This conformal coating is in close contact with the device and effectively removes heat from it.
“We compared our coatings to standard heat dissipation methods. It turned out that our method dissipates 740% more power per unit volume.one of the researchers explained.
It is expected that in the future this invention will make electronic devices, including telephones and computers, more powerful and compact.

US military space intelligence to spend ‘billions of dollars’ buying satellite imagery from commercial companies

The US National Space Reconnaissance Office announced the largest ever contracts worth “billions of dollars” for the purchase of satellite imagery from commercial companies. There are three such companies – BlackSky, Maxar and Planet.
“These contracts, which are valued in the billions of dollars and will run for the next 10 years, represent a historic expansion of commercial imagery purchases by the National Space Intelligence Agency.”the agency said in a statement.
The exact amount of contracts is not called. It is noted that they are concluded for five years with the possibility of an additional extension until 2032.

Huge cheap smartphone with a giant battery. Tecno Pova 3 introduced

Tecno introduced the Pova 3 smartphone, which boasts a huge battery and a huge screen.
The novelty received a 6.9-inch 90-Hz IPS display with Full HD + resolution. The battery capacity is 7000 mAh. Samsung has stopped experimenting with such smartphones, so it is very, very difficult to find something like this on the market.
The heart of the novelty is the SoC MediaTek Helio G88. There are 4 or 6 GB of RAM and 64 or 128 GB of flash memory. The main camera is represented primarily by a 50-megapixel main sensor, and the other two can be left out, as these are just “plugs” with a resolution of 2 megapixels. The resolution of the front camera is 8 megapixels.
From the rest, we can note stereo speakers, a design diluted with a vertical stripe, 25-watt charging and 10-watt reverse charging. By the way, for some reason, a 33-watt charger comes with the device, so this value appears in some promotional materials, which is confusing.
In the Philippines, where the smartphone first debuted, it costs just $172.
