In the mid-2000s, MSI had a line of fairly popular Megabook laptops. It is not known whether the Taiwanese company has secured this brand, but now Tecno has introduced its first laptop, the Megabook T1, under exactly the same designation.
The novelty turned out to be interesting and in some ways even contradictory. So, there is a large aluminum alloy body and a 15-inch screen (with an IPS matrix, Full HD resolution and coverage of 100% of the sRGB color space), but the processor is only a 10th generation Core i5, and there is no discrete graphics accelerator, although there is space inside enough.
The amount of RAM in the base is non-standard 12 GB, in the top version – 16 GB. SSD capacity – 512 GB or 1 TB. The thickness of the case is only 14.8 mm, the weight is 1.48 kg, which is really good for a 15-inch model.
The Megabook T1 configuration also includes a 2-megapixel webcam, a fingerprint scanner, a backlit keyboard with an additional Num Pad, a microSD card slot, an HDMI video output, and four USB ports (one of which is USB-C).
The battery capacity was 70 Wh – the creators claim that the laptop works offline for 17.5 hours. The power supply includes a compact power supply with an output power of 65 watts.
Tecno introduced the Megabook T1 at IFA 2022, which is taking place in Berlin these days, but the cost of the novelty has not yet been announced.
Laptop shipments are falling. HP leads the world, Lenovo leads China
A study by analyst firm Canalys shows that in the second quarter of 2022, due to the ongoing decline in education purchases, compared to the same period last year, laptop shipments decreased by 18.6%. up to 54.5 million units. Mobile PC shipments have been declining for three consecutive quarters.
The report notes that in the second quarter of 2022, many of the world’s largest personal computer markets faced huge inflationary pressures that could not be effectively contained, leading to a decline in demand, especially from the consumer sector.
The top five global laptop vendors in Q2 2022 include Lenovo with 24% of the market, HP with 18%, Dell (17%), Asus (8%) and Acer (8%).
In the mainland China market, the top five are Lenovo (37%), Dell (11%), Huawei (10%), Asus (9%) and HP (7%).
India’s Reliance Jio is preparing a $184 laptop with a built-in LTE modem and is going to sell it in the ‘hundreds of thousands’
Reuters news agency, citing its sources, reports that India’s Reliance Jio is preparing to release a $184 laptop with an “integrated SIM card.” Apparently, we are talking about an eSIM connected to the built-in LTE modem. The company believes the JioBook will be as big a hit in the local market as the sub-$100 JioPhone has been.
Reliance Jio partners participating in the project include Qualcomm and Microsoft. The first will provide a hardware platform, the second – “compatibility with a number of applications.” Perhaps we are talking about the Office package for the Arm platform.
The laptop will be available to both corporate customers and educational institutions. And its retail user version will appear three months after the corporate one. A 5G version of the JioBook will also be released later. The JioBook will be built by local contract manufacturer Flex, and the company plans to sell “hundreds of thousands” of devices by March 2023, one source said.
A strange gaming laptop without a discrete graphics card and not at all with Windows. Lenovo is preparing the release of the IdeaPad Gaming Chromebook
Lenovo is preparing a gaming laptop of the IdeaPad Gaming line, which, firstly, does not work under Windows, and secondly, does not have a discrete graphics card.
The full name of the novelty is the IdeaPad Gaming Chromebook, and here it is already clear that Chrome OS acts as the OS. But the operating system here is just one of the oddities of this gaming laptop. The second, as already mentioned, is the lack of a discrete graphics card. What’s more, it’s not just some Ryzen 7 6800U, whose iGPU is so powerful that such a laptop could hardly be called a gaming laptop. Instead, Intel processors serve as the heart here: Core i3-1215U or Core i5-1235U. Recall that their graphics cores are very modest in their capabilities, so you don’t even have to think about some modern demanding games. Moreover, the laptop also has a screen with a resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels, which creates an additional load on the GPU.
As a result, it is completely unclear why the laptop is gaming, but here even the design is the same as in other Lenovo gaming models.
As for the rest of the parameters, the novelty is equipped with a 120-Hz IPS screen with a diagonal of 16 inches, a 512 GB SSD, 8 GB of RAM, a pair of USB-C ports, a pair of USB-A, microSD, Wi-Fi 6 and an aluminum cover.
