MediaTek will lead the chip market, Qualcomm will remain the leader in the 5G segment, and Unisoc will take over HiSilicon

About two years ago, MediaTek struggled to maintain its relevance in the market due to the poor performance of its flagship chips. Things started to change with the introduction of the Helio G90 series in September 2019. The company took its most courageous step in early 2020, presenting the first Dimensity 5G chips. The company has announced a variety of 5G-enabled chips for a wide variety of price points, allowing it to take a piece of Qualcomm’s market.

The Taiwanese chipmaker entered the low-to-mid-range 5G segment much earlier than Qualcomm. It took the American company a long time to start shipping its Snapdragon 690 5G SoC. The budget SoC Snapdragon 480 appeared only this year. According to Counterpoint Research, MediaTek and Qualcomm will maintain their leading positions in the market, but the Taiwanese manufacturer will gain a definite advantage due to its huge portfolio of chips. The forecast says that MediaTek will take 37% of the global chip market, but Qualcomm will remain the leader in the 5G segment.

HiSilicon was hit hardest this year. Due to restrictions imposed by the US on Huawei, TSMC cannot support HiSilicon. As a result, HiSilicon will be replaced by the ultra-budget chip maker from China Unisoc. The Chinese firm will begin to be regarded as one of the strongest chip makers in the world. Counterpoint Research believes that more and more OEMs will start using Unisoc SoCs, especially after the announcement of the Tanggula 5G SoC.

In terms of the 5G segment, Qualcomm could bounce back by the second half of 2021. Almost 9 out of 10 smartphones will be equipped with SoCs from Qualcomm, Apple or MediaTek, according to the report. These companies will leave competitors behind, including Samsung and Exynos.
