MediaTek Pentonic 2000 chip is designed for 8K TVs supporting 120Hz frame rate



MediaTek recently unveiled the Pentonic 2000 smart TV chip, pledging that it “gives flagship 8K TVs incredible features and innovative technologies in the areas of display, sound, artificial intelligence, broadcast and communications.” By the way, according to the manufacturer’s estimates, today there are more than 2 billion TV sets in the world that use its microcircuits.

The new chip supports 8K resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. This also applies to the built-in MEMC (Motion Estimation / Motion Compensation) block. The built-in multi-core AI processor developed by MediaTek supports the MediaTek AI-Picture Quality engine with second generation scene recognition and third generation object recognition technologies. Since most content is streamed below 8K, support for 8K AI-Super Resolution technology is important, which intelligently scales content to the display’s native resolution as well as improves image quality in real time.

The Pentonic 2000 is said to be the highest performing product in its category, featuring the industry’s fastest CPU / GPU combination, backed by high memory bandwidth and high-speed UFS 3.1 storage. In addition, the Pentonic 2000 is the first commercial TV IC based on TSMC N7 (7nm class) technology for high performance and energy efficiency.

It is also the first commercial 8K TV IC to support Versatile Video Coding (VVC) H.266, a coding standard that provides improved compression efficiency for next generation streaming and broadcast media. In addition, the Pentonic 2000 supports Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos for “the best cinematic quality.” Of course, the widely used hardware decoding engines HEVC, VP9, ​​?? AVS3 and AV1 are supported.

The Pentonic 2000 also mentions its proprietary Intelligent View technology, which allows multiple picture-in-picture (PiP) or picture-by-picture (PbP) screens, allowing a large 8K display to display a “video wall” of content from a variety of media sources.

Leveraging the USB and PCIe connectivity available in the Pentonic 2000, TV designers can add MediaTek Wi-Fi 6E solutions like the Filogic 320 or 330, or even MediaTek 5G cellular solutions to provide the fastest wireless internet connection needed for streaming. 8K or multiple streams for PiP and PbP.

The platform’s versatility, supporting, among other things, the next-generation ATSC 3.0 broadcast standard, allows manufacturers to develop one model for many markets.

The AnTuTu benchmark team has published a ranking of mid-range Android smartphones for November 2021 for the international market. It differs markedly from the similar AnTuTu ranking in China.

The second place is also taken by the Xiaomi Mi 11 Lite for the fourth month in a row with 524,464 points. But the Honor 50 burst into third place with 516 915 points, which was not previously represented in the international ranking. It’s funny that a new generation series, Honor 60, has already been presented in China.

“Hopefully we see better performance out of the box,” PCMag compares Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 to Apple A14 Bionic and Apple A15 Bionic



PCMag had the opportunity to test the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC and compare it with the Apple A14 Bionic and Apple A15 Bionic.

Based on the test results, PCMag concluded that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is indeed better than its predecessor, but still loses to Apple’s latest SoC. The tests themselves were carried out on a prototype that the chipmaker showed off at the Snapdragon Summit booth. The prototype received a FullHD + display with a frequency of 144 Hz, 8 GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 512 GB of UFS 3.1 flash memory.

In terms of processor performance, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor is on par with the Apple A14 Bionic found in the iPhone 12 and is inferior to the Apple A15 Bionic. Compared to its predecessor, the new platform shows an increase of about 15%, but not 20%, as stated by Qualcomm.

The prototype worked well in the Basemark web browser, but it is far from the iPhone 13 in terms of performance. Where Qualcomm’s flagship SoCs have always done well is the graphics power. Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is no exception: according to the results of the GFXBench 5 test, the new Adreno video accelerator confidently outperforms all competitors, including the Apple A15 Bionic.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 also looks decent in PCMark Work 3.0. At the same time, testers note that the prototype with Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 often worked incorrectly, some applications crashed. Therefore, it is too early to draw final conclusions. Already, there are concerns that the new chipset generates a lot of heat and overheats.

The prototype was buggy and unoptimized (Android’s multitasking button often didn’t work and Basemark Web crashed several times). Hopefully we will see better performance from off-the-shelf products like the Samsung Galaxy S22 and OnePlus 10.
