According to experts from the analytical company Counterpoint, global shipments of single-chip systems (SoCs) for smartphones in the second quarter of 2021 increased by 31% compared to the same period last year. If we talk only about SoC for smartphones with support for 5G networks, shipments have almost quadrupled.

The market leader is MediaTek. It holds 43% of the smartphone SoC market. A year ago, MediaTek’s share was 26%. Qualcomm is in second place. The share of this company decreased over the year from 28% to 24%.

The third place is taken by Apple. Stable demand for smartphones of the iPhone 12 series allowed it to stay at last year’s level of 14%.

This is followed by UNISOC. The company has seen impressive market share growth from 4% to 9%, attracting major OEMs such as Honor, Realme and Motorola as customers.

Samsung closes the top five. The share of the South Korean manufacturer decreased over the year from 12% to 7%.

Even more – from 16% to 3% – the share of HiSilicon decreased. Due to US bans, this company was unable to release the Kirin SoCs used in Huawei smartphones.

Samsung mobile head Tae Moon Roh (TM Roh) confirmed that he has made two work visits to the United States this year to obtain more stocks of chips and application processors needed to make smartphones.

According to TheElec, Tae Moon Ro met with major component manufacturers in the US to get more chips and asked major partners to increase shipments for the South Korean tech giant. However, according to sources close to this, the trips did not end as Samsung planned.

The first trip was made in March, the second took place in July. The source also added that the president of Samsung Mobile visited the headquarters of the global SoC maker in July and asked for additional chips, but was ultimately denied.

The component maker responded to Tae Moon Ro that the company also wants to increase its total supply, but cannot yet increase shipments for Samsung. The source adds that Tae Moon Ro was also accompanied by the vice president, who stayed in the United States after the division head’s visit and returned to South Korea after staying there for about three months.

However, a company spokesman said that their trips still cannot be called completely unsuccessful, since they really led to the fact that the brand was able to increase sales a little.

Samsung will earn a lot again, but again not thanks to smartphones. There was a forecast for the third financial quarter

Published

on

Samsung again predicts excellent financial results for the next quarter. The third fiscal quarter for the Korean giant should end with an operating profit of about $ 13.8 billion.

In annual terms, this will correspond to an increase of 31.9%. At the same time, revenue will grow by 12.2% to $ 63 billion. Compared to the previous quarter, the growth will be 29.7% and 18%, respectively.

The reason for the growth, as in the previous quarter, primarily lies in the huge demand for semiconductors. It is this division that will bring the company most of the profits (about 60%). The change in the exchange rate of the Korean won will also contribute.

But with smartphones, everything is not so good. The division’s operating income is expected to be $ 2.95-3.2 billion versus $ 3.75 billion a year earlier. At the same time, Samsung is expected to sell 69 million smartphones for the quarter. Sales of the flexible Galaxy Z models of the new generation are exceeding expectations, but they may not have a big impact on the overall situation.
