Mazda wants to reduce the proportion of Chinese parts in their cars

Mazda Motor sent out a letter to its suppliers asking them to build up stocks of components in Japan and, if possible, move their production from China. The reason is disruptions in the supply of parts due to local lockdowns in Shanghai in connection with another outbreak of coronavirus.

In April-June 2022, Mazda posted an operating loss of $144.4 million. The company explains that some of the critical electronic components are sourced from China, and their supplies were unstable in the past quarter.

Mazda Motor Senior Executive Director Takeshi Mukai says that even when purchasing parts directly from Japanese and European manufacturers, they contain elements from China, so the company will try to diversify the geography of purchases in the case of new models.

The whitest paint in the world just got better Now

The unique white paint, created by scientists at Purdue University, was recognized in the Guinness Book of Records in 2022. The unique composition is able to keep the surface cool, reducing the need for air conditioning.

Now researchers at Purdue University have developed a new compound that is thinner and lighter, ideal for removing heat from not only cars but other vehicles, including trains and planes.

“Everyone has contacted me, from spacecraft manufacturers to architects to clothing and footwear companies,” said Xiulin Zhuang, professor of mechanical engineering and paint developer at Purdue University. “They basically had two questions: where can I buy it and can I make the layer thinner?”

The unique paint uses barium sulfate nanoparticles that can reflect 98.1% of sunlight, as well as cool outdoor surfaces by more than 4.5 degrees Celsius relative to the environment. However, for the coating to work effectively, its thickness had to be at least 400 microns.

Scientists experimented with other materials that could scatter sunlight. The latest paint formula includes hexagonal boron nitride as a pigment. This substance is most often used in lubricants. The resulting composition is able to meet all the declared parameters and reflect up to 97.9% of sunlight when applied in a layer with a thickness of 150 microns

Tesla is removing ultrasonic sensors from Model 3 and Model Y vehicles, the next step in CEO Elon Musk’s plan to use only cameras and software to support its advanced driver assistance system and other active safety features.

Starting this month, all Model 3 and Model Y vehicles produced for North America, Europe, the Middle East and Taiwan will no longer be equipped with the 12 ultrasonic sensors that were previously installed on the front and rear bumpers of vehicles. Ultrasonic sensors, which measure distance using ultrasonic waves, are commonly used as parking proximity sensors.

Tesla announced the changes about 17 months after it said it would remove the radar from its vehicles. The decision to ditch radar or ultrasonic sensors runs counter to the approach of the rest of the industry, which is adding rather than removing sensors from its vehicles to support self-driving systems.

Automakers typically use a combination of radar and cameras, and some even a laser rangefinder, to provide adaptive cruise control, which adjusts the vehicle’s speed to the surrounding traffic, as well as allowing you to keep lane and change lanes.

Tesla began its so-called Tesla Vision plan in 2021 when it removed the radar from Model 3 and Model Y vehicles made in North America, followed by the Model S and Model X in 2022. Earlier this year, Tesla expanded it to include into it Model Y and Model 3 in Europe and the Middle East.

Tesla said it will begin removing ultrasonic sensors from Model 3 and Model Y vehicles. They will also be removed from Model S and Model X in 2023.

China has successfully tested a new engine for its Long March 9 super-heavy launch vehicle, which is set to play a key role in lunar exploration and deep space missions.

According to the South China Morning Post, Chinese scientists have managed to overcome technical difficulties in creating a prototype of the YF-79 rocket engine, which is intended for the third stage of the rocket. Experts have successfully carried out three ground tests of it, according to the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC).

The 25-ton YF-79 is a hydrogen-oxygen engine with an expansion thrust cycle. The first stage of the Long March 9 with boosters will be powered by four YF-130 oxygen-kerosene engines with an additional combustion cycle. A pair of YF-90 hydrogen-oxygen engines is provided for the second stage of the rocket. New YF-79 engines are developed for the third stage, there are four in total.

It is expected that the “Changzheng-9” will be able to launch up to 140 tons of payload into low Earth orbit, from 15 to 50 tons to the Moon, from 12 to 44 tons to Mars.
