Major publishing house Reach begins using ChatGPT for news writing in test mode

Reach, publisher of the Daily Mirror and Daily Express newspapers, is already testing ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence chatbot for writing short news articles.

Reach chief executive Jim Mullen told the Financial Times that the company has set up a task force to explore how the tool can be used to help reporters write stories for topics like local weather and traffic.

We commissioned a working group of our technical and editorial teams to explore the potential and limitations of machine learning like ChatGPT. We see the potential to use it in the future to support our journalists with more mundane stories like local traffic and weather, or find creative uses for it outside of our traditional content areas.

Reach publishes over 130 national and regional publications including the Daily Record and the Manchester Evening News. The company warned last month that its full-year earnings would be lower than expected after it was hit by inflation and declining advertising rates, especially in print publications. Reach also said it would cut about 200 jobs on its editorial and commercial teams out of a total workforce of 4,500.

However, Reach is expanding its presence in the US, opening a New York office this year and launching US-based online versions of the Daily Express and Irish Star to reach out to the US Irish-American population.

Reach said exploring the use of AI has more to do with the adoption of new technologies and the use of data than cutting costs, adding that Reach now employs more journalists than ever in the last 10 years.

However, Chris Morley, coordinator for the National Union of Journalists, expressed some concern and said he “would be looking to meet with the company.”

I’m concerned that the company didn’t speak to us at all as it could affect jobs. We are losing 200 jobs in the Reach group and this is a painful process.

Francesco Marconi, co-founder of computer journalism firm AppliedXL, who previously worked on automation and artificial intelligence at the Associated Press, sees ChatGPT in journalism as “ancillary.”

In January, it became known that the large American online publication BuzzFeed is starting to use artificial intelligence in the form of the ChatGPT neural network after laying off a large number of employees. At the same time, CNET tried to use ChatGPT to write economic notes, before observers indicated that they contained many errors.

NASA postpones first manned flight of Boeings Starliner

NASA announced the postponement of the first test manned flight of the Boeing CST-100 Starliner. It will take place not in April, but in May, after the Axiom Mission 2. Reportedly, the team is now assessing the readiness of the ship and conducting final pre-flight checks.

NASA postpones first manned flight of Boeing's Starliner

The reason for the delay was the need for additional testing of the Starliner manual control system. It is needed in case of a software failure so that the ship does not lose control.

The first Starliner crew will include astronauts Barry Wilmore and Sunita Williams. If everything goes according to plan, they will have to spend about two weeks on board the ISS. After the successful return of the ship, it will receive NASA certification for regular manned flights, such as SpaceX previously received with its Crew Dragon spacecraft.

Note that the development of Starliner has been going on since 2014, but so far the ship has not received permission for regular flights.

In China, an orgy of discounts on cars is raging. Discounts reach 5000-6000 dollars, and somewhere they can give a whole car

Almost all major market players offer discounts. The Chery Tiggo 8 Plus, for example, is on sale for around $4,500, bringing the base version to just $14,000. BYD machines are on sale with discounts up to $3,000.

The premium brand Zeekr lures otherwise: the 001 electric car is offered 22-inch wheels and a Z-Sport exterior and interior package, which would cost $5,100 in total. The Changan Deepal sub-brand offers both discounts and gifts at once, for a total of approximately $6,400.

But one of the Toyota dealers did the most impressive. When you buy the bZ4X electric crossover at full price, you get a budget Toyota Vios sedan as a gift, which in itself costs almost $11,000!

The situation with huge discounts began to take shape since the beginning of the year, when Tesla cut the prices of their cars very much. The source adds that most of the discounts do not apply to the newest gasoline models, but, as we can see, there are exceptions.
