Luminar Iris Plus lidar unveiled with 300m range to appear in Mercedes-Benz production vehicles
Luminar, which manufactures laser rangefinders (lidars), held an event during which it introduced a new version of its Iris sensor. It will be included in Mercedes-Benz production vehicles.
Lidar, a key component of self-driving technology, is a laser sensor that uses infrared light to determine the shape and distance of objects. This helps autonomous vehicles “see” other objects on the road, such as cars, pedestrians, and cyclists, without the help of GPS or a network connection.
The Luminar Iris Plus laser rangefinder will help “improve vehicle safety and autonomous capabilities by providing small object collision avoidance at speeds up to autobahn level.” The sensor, which is designed to seamlessly blend into the production car’s roofline, has a range of 300m. The previous model could detect objects up to 250m away.
Luminar is working with Mercedes to integrate the Iris Plus lidar into new vehicles, with mass production expected in 2025. The company said it plans to open an additional plant in Asia to support production.
In addition, Luminar will acquire the lidar division of data storage company Seagate to accelerate its own lidar manufacturing process. The company also recently acquired Civil Maps to access the firm’s ultra-detailed and automatically updated 3D maps of various cities. Together with Seagate, Luminar acquires the company’s lidar-related intellectual property, assets and technical team.
Luminar is working with artificial intelligence company Scale.ai to strengthen its machine learning system for object detection.
Luminar has become one of the most ambitious players in the lidar industry. In addition to Mercedes-Benz, the company has signed agreements with Volvo, Audi, Toyota Research Institute, Intel Mobileye, Airbus and two Chinese companies: automaker SAIC and operator AV Pony.ai.

Tesla GigaBier introduced. It’s already available for purchase.

Tesla has released a limited edition Cybertruck-themed GigaBier beer. Beer is offered for $30.
It is worth recognizing that this is not the first original idea from Elon Musk’s companies. Previously, The Boring Company offered flamethrowers and Burnt Hair cologne with the smell of burnt hair, and Tesla released a Cyberwhistle in the spirit of Cybertruck. Of course, there was Tesla branded tequila. By the way, at the time of its announcement, they also thought that this was an April Fool’s joke.
The Tesla GigaBier bottle is designed to mimic the shape of the Cybertruck, paying homage to the 500-year-old Reinheitsgebot tradition of German brewing. Enjoy this beer brewed in Berlin with our exclusive Cyberhops and notes of citrus, bergamot and sweet fruit. Each bottle has a glow-in-the-dark Giga logo.
