Log4Shell vulnerability affects Intel, Microsoft and Nvidia, but not AMD

Published

on

A Log4Shell vulnerability was discovered a few days ago that could allow attackers to control open web servers by sending and activating a malicious string of text. It has affected major technology companies including Intel, Microsoft and Nvidia. The vulnerability is in the open source Apache Log4j library, which logs events and errors inside Java applications.

The vulnerability, also known as Log4J, has been identified as CVE-2021-44228 by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The vulnerability can be accessed through a mobile device, API, or browser window. According to the source, the attack could lead to data leakage and other unpleasant consequences.

Intel has nine applications that use Java and are vulnerable to hacking:

  • Intel Audio Development Kit
  • Intel Datacenter Manager
  • oneAPI sample browser plugin for Eclipse
  • Intel System Debugger
  • Intel Secure Device Onboard (GitHub)
  • Intel Genomics Kernel Library
  • Intel System Studio
  • Computer Vision Annotation Tool maintained by Intel
  • Intel Sensor Solution Firmware Development Kit

Because Nvidia’s applications and services are constantly updated, it is much more difficult to identify the vulnerability. The manufacturer has overpowered four products in which the likelihood of encountering Log4J is high, especially if outdated drivers are used:

  • CUDA Toolkit Visual Profiler and Nsight Eclipse Edition
  • DGX Systems
  • NetQ
  • vGPU Software License Server

Because Nvidia DGX corporate PCs with Ubuntu pre-installed are also vulnerable, the company has turned to users who can manually install the patch to update their systems immediately.

Since the discovery of the vulnerability, Microsoft Azure Spring Cloud and the Azure DevOps app have been patched. Azure Spring Cloud uses certain Log4Shell elements during the system boot process. Due to the nature of this vulnerability, a system that is not updated will become vulnerable.

Interestingly, AMD remained untouched by Log4J. After initial scrutiny of its product lines, the company announced that none of them were harmed. However, the manufacturer intends to continue searching due to the severity of the vulnerability.

The GeForce RTX 3050 can now also be almost fully

A couple of weeks ago, the LHR protection in Nvidia graphics cards was cracked, which allowed everyone to use accelerators for Ethereum mining at full capacity again. But in fact, then the protection of LHR v2 was cracked, but not LHR v3.

The GeForce RTX 3050 can now also be almost fully used for Ethereum mining. Nvidia LHR v3 security cracked 90%

The LHR v3 version is present in Nvidia’s latest releases: RTX 3050 and RTX 3080 12GB. And it is still not completely hacked, but now the NiceHash miner is able to use 90% of the performance of these cards when mining cryptocurrency. It’s not a complete hack yet, but it’s getting very close.

Fortunately, at the moment the cryptocurrency market is in a state of decline, so it hardly makes any sense to buy the same RTX 3050 for mining, which means that gamers need not worry for now.

By the way, a large article has been published on our website with an analysis of methods for cracking Nvidia protection.

Nvidia lost LHR mining protection is also hacked under

Two days have passed since the NiceHash developers cracked the Nvidia LHR protection, as the NBMiner team also pleased their users with the same news. Only this time we are talking about software for Linux.

Nvidia lost. LHR mining protection is also hacked under Linux. This was done by NBMiner developers

Thus, Nvidia’s protection completely fell for both Windows and Linux. Unfortunately, both programs are closed source, so it’s not clear what mechanisms the developers used to hack.

Whether the loss of Nvidia will affect the availability and prices of video cards is still difficult to say. At the moment, the cryptocurrency market continues to fall, but sooner or later it will turn around, and gamers may again face shortages and overpriced graphics cards.
