Lockheed Martin and Omnispace to develop 5G space network

Lockheed Martin today said it is joining forces with communications provider Omnispace to develop a 5G space network for both commercial and government use.

A US defense contractor claims the 5G global space network will allow users to switch between satellite and terrestrial networks, eliminating the need for multiple devices on different networks. The network will offer connectivity to commercial, corporate and government devices regardless of environment or location.

“Omnispace is fully committed to the vision of creating a new global communications platform that connects 5G directly to mobile devices from space,” said CEO Ram Viswanathan.

James Taiclet, who took over as CEO of Lockheed last June, has previously shown interest in 5G as a means of empowering the military. Last year, he said he envisions a future in which half to three-quarters of military vehicles will be self-driving, and a robust 5G network will be the backbone of that fleet.
