LG is designing a smartphone with a flexible roll-out display

The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has issued a patent for a “Flexible display device” to LG Electronics. The document describes a new smartphone with a pull-out screen.

As planned by LG, the gadget will receive a flexible touchscreen display that will curl up inside the case. This will allow the device to be used in several modes, including in the form of a small tablet.

In the normal state, the owner will be dealing with a traditional candy bar type smartphone. By pulling the screen out of the case, the user will be able to approximately double the useful area of the panel.

It is noted that the flexible display can be made using organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology or electronic paper. The patent describes the design of a module that allows the screen to be twisted and pulled out.

As you can see in the illustrations, the device has a symmetrical USB Type-C port. In addition, the presence of an infrared transceiver is mentioned.

The patent application was filed in September last year, and the document was issued this month. About when a smartphone with the described design may appear on the commercial market, nothing has been reported.
