Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold – First Reviews Reveal Foldable Laptop Disadvantages

Published

on

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold received its first reviews eighteen months after the company unveiled a prototype. However, early tests revealed performance issues with the Intel Lakefield processor and the limitations of its foldable form factor.

The ThinkPad X1 Fold is finally in the hands of reviewers. Unfortunately for Lenovo, early reviews of the foldable device weren’t rosy. The ThinkPad X1 Fold starts at $ 2,499 with only 256GB of storage and no additional accessories. Lenovo is asking $ 2,749 for a version with a detachable keyboard and stylus, and another $ 50 for a licensed Windows 10 Pro. The price jumps to $ 3,099 if you want 1TB of storage instead of 256GB.

For that money, you can buy pretty much any high-end or 2-in-1 laptop, though they don’t have the foldable display that the ThinkPad X1 Fold has. The foldable screen doesn’t seem to offer additional features that the Surface Pro already had. MKHBD highlights the ThinkPad X1 Fold’s decent tablet mode, but the detachable keyboard still provides better typing than the on-screen keyboard.

PC Watch experts have demonstrated the flaws of the Intel Lakefield processor. The m3-8100Y processor in the Surface Go 2 outperforms the ThinkPad X1 Fold and its Core i5-L16G7 in several tests. For example, in PCMark the battery lasts longer. According to the database, the Core m3-8100Y should offer about 91% of the power of the Core i5-L16G7, but Lenovo may have slightly tweaked the processor performance in the ThinkPad X1 Fold.

All in all, the ThinkPad X1 Fold is disappointing with price, performance and questionable versatility, which is worse than the Surface Pro. Nevertheless, if in the next versions Lenovo will follow the path of Samsung, then folding laptops of the second and third generation will already be able to justify their price.
