Just plug in a monitor: Raspberry launches a compact keyboard with built-in computer

The Raspberry Pi Foundation has announced an unusual device called the Raspberry Pi 400. At first glance, this is an ordinary keyboard, but in reality it is a computer built into the keyboard. It is enough to connect the gadget to an external monitor or TV through one of the two HDMI ports to get a full-fledged computer at your disposal for everyday tasks – from video playback and web browsing to programming.

The Raspberry Pi 400 is available to order starting November 2 on the manufacturer’s official website. The price of the issue is $ 70 for the keyboard itself with a computer inside, and for $ 100 complete with the device, the buyer will receive a mouse, power supply, microSD card, HDMI cable and user manual.

The Raspberry Pi 400 form factor immediately evokes associations with early home computers such as the BBC Micro or ZX Spectrum, and this is no coincidence. Although craftsmen use compact Raspberry Pi computers to build systems ranging from AirPlay receivers to smart home automation, they were originally designed as affordable computers to teach kids the basics of programming.

In general, the new Raspberry Pi 400 is similar to the Raspberry Pi 4 released last year. The new computer received a faster quad-core ARM Cortex-A72 processor with a clock speed of 1.8 GHz instead of the same, but 1.5 GHz, as the Raspberry Pi. 4. The amount of RAM is 4 GB. There is also gigabit Ethernet, Bluetooth 5.0 and Wi-Fi 802.11ac, a pair of microHDMI ports, two USB 3.0 ports and one USB 2.0 port, a microSD card slot and a GPIO connector for connecting niche devices.

The Raspberry Pi 400 keyboard layout is region dependent and includes 78 or 79 keys. There are currently six different layouts available – for the UK, USA, Germany, France, Italy or Spain. Also in the near future they promise to release versions for Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Portugal and Japan.

The keyboard with the Raspberry Pi 400 computer is made in pink and white colors. The manufacturer admits that not everyone will like this color, and therefore promised to release the gadget in gray and black in the near future.
