Jeff Bezos did not kick anyone: he successfully flew into space and returned to Earth

Today, a historic event took place – Blue Origin launched the New Shepard, which was attended by the founder of Blue Origin itself and the Internet giant Amazon, billionaire Jeff Bezos.

In addition to the richest man in the world, three more space tourists participated in the flight – Bezos’ brother Mark, 82-year-old Wally Funk (professional aviator and NASA veteran) and 18-year-old Oliver Daman (student and son of a Dutch businessman). Wally Funk became the oldest astronaut and Oliver Daman the youngest.

The reusable suborbital spacecraft New Shepard was launched from Launch Site One in Texas. This is New Shepard’s sixteenth launch, but this is the first time a ship has been launched with passengers on board. The entire flight duration was about 10 minutes 28 seconds, several minutes of which passed in zero gravity.

Jeff Bezos did not kick anyone: he successfully flew into space and returned to Earth

The crew capsule reached a maximum altitude of 106 km at three times the speed of sound before parting with the launch vehicle. It is noted that passengers experienced a short-term sensation of weightlessness and were able to see the curvature of the Earth at the edge of its atmosphere.

As a result, Jeff Bezos with the crew in the capsule successfully returned to Earth. The New Shepard launch vehicle landed vertically on a concrete pad five miles from the launch site. After landing, Bezos joked: “My main mission was accomplished – I didn’t kick anyone.” He also shared his impressions:

I was surprised at how easy it was to work in zero gravity … it was like swimming. “

New Shepard has risen above 100 km above sea level – at this height is the conditional boundary of space, recognized in most countries – the so-called Karman line. Interestingly, in the United States, the boundary of space is considered to be an altitude of 80 km. As a result, Jeff Bezos earned astronaut status internationally.

Bezos noted that launching into space has been his dream since childhood. He became the second billionaire to fly his own rocket into space after Virgin Galactic founder Richard Branson, who flew the SpaceShipTwo on July 11. However, Branson ascended to an altitude of about 80 km and did not overcome the conditional “space” boundary of 100 km.

FTC Seeks To Block Nvidia’s Purchase Of Arm In Court

Published

on

The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has filed a lawsuit seeking to block the US $ 40 billion acquisition of British Arm by Nvidia. According to the American antitrust regulator, “the vertical deal will give one of the largest chip manufacturers control over the technology and development that rival firms rely on to create their chips.” The FTC’s lawsuit alleges that the combined firm “will have the means and incentives to suppress next-generation innovative technologies, including those used to power data centers and driver assistance systems in cars.”

The plaintiff recalls that the Californian company Nvidia is one of the largest and most expensive computer companies in the world. It designs and markets chips and devices, best known as the dominant supplier of GPUs for personal computers and data centers. Nvidia also develops and markets products for today’s networks and cars. In these areas, both Nvidia and its main competitors rely on Arm technology.

In turn, Arm, owned by Tokyo-based Softbank Group, does not supply or sell off-the-shelf chips or devices. He designs and licenses microprocessor architectures to other technology companies, including Nvidia. These companies rely on Arm’s developments to produce processors used in a wide range of modern devices, from smartphones and tablets to driver assistance systems and servers in large data centers.

Since Arm technology is a critical factor that allows competition between Nvidia and its competitors in multiple markets, the lawsuit alleges that the proposed merger will give Nvidia an opportunity and incentive to use its control over the technology to undermine its competitors. The lawsuit alleges that declining product quality, less innovation, higher prices and fewer choices “will hurt the millions of Americans who benefit from Arm-based products.” The lawsuit also alleges that the acquisition will harm competition by giving Nvidia access to the confidential information of Arm licensees, which include Nvidia’s competitors, and that it could reduce Arm’s incentive to innovate so as not to run counter to Nvidia’s business interests.

The process is scheduled to begin on August 9, 2022.
