Japanese Nikon cameras will no longer be available

on

Nikon will stop producing camera bodies in Japan by the end of this year, according to company officials. The company acknowledged that camera sales are declining amid improvements in smartphone photography capabilities.

The camera giant will relocate production from its factory in Miyagi Prefecture as part of its new structural reform. Camera body production will then move from the only domestically produced camera to a large factory in Thailand. According to a company representative, “the level of quality of our products will be maintained even if they are produced abroad.”

The company added that it will maintain employment at the plant by continuing to manufacture certain camera components as well as other sensor products for healthcare and other industries. Likewise, the camera maker is also planning to close two factories in Yamagata and Fukushima prefectures that are responsible for processing detachable lens parts for digital cameras.
