Japan plans to introduce digital currency based on yen
A consortium of about 70 Japanese firms, including three megabanks, said it intends to launch the yen-based digital currency in fiscal 2022, preceded by testing in the coming months.
The digital currency, tentatively named “DCJPY”, will be backed by bank deposits, and the acceleration of large-scale remittances and settlements between companies will ensure the use of a common platform. This was announced by Kazuhiro Tokita, executive director of the DeCurret cryptocurrency exchange, which leads the consortium.
The consortium, which includes Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, Mizuho Financial Group and Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group, has met regularly since last year to explore ways to build a unified infrastructure for digital payments.
Each of the three megabanks has introduced their own digital payment systems, but they all fall short of solutions created by tech companies like PayPay, backed by technology investor SoftBank Group, which is not part of the consortium.
The consortium includes banks, brokerage and insurance companies, as well as non-financial firms such as Nippon Telegraph and Telephone, Kansai Electric Power and East Japan Railway. By participating in testing the new currency, they will assess its capabilities in a wide variety of industries, from energy to retail.
