Japan allocated $80,000,000 to Astroscale Japan for research and removal of space debris

The funded mission will be divided into three phases: Astroscale Japan will receive up to $18,000,000 in the first phase and $80,000,000 in total for all three phases. Mission development will begin this month with a maximum deadline of March 2028.

The SBIR program was created to encourage research and development by Japanese startups and innovative technology development organizations and support government implementation of the results.

The program was announced to start in July 2023, Astroscale Japan was selected in the space category with the project “Development and demonstration of technologies and systems for removing satellites and other objects from orbit” under the section “Development and demonstration of technologies necessary to reduce space debris “

This mission will expand Astroscale’s communications capabilities and ability to inspect and diagnose active spacecraft and large debris in space.

This year, Astroscale Japan will launch a similar mission to inspect and diagnose the rocket’s spent upper stage. Active Debris Removal by Astroscale-Japan (ADRAS-J) will be the world’s first attempt to safely approach, assess and examine a large debris debris. During this mission, ADRAS-J will rendezvous with the Japanese upper stage and demonstrate an approach and state assessment including rotation vector and structural state.

One of the key challenges of such missions is the lack of GPS data for unprepared objects, such as spent upper stages and failed satellites. This means that the precise location and orbital position needed for the communications and approach mission are not available.

Once launched, the Astroscale servicing spacecraft will first use ground-based observations of an object’s approximate orbital position for a long-range approach, and then switch to its own sensors for a safe closer approach and inspection.

Hot 40 Pro, as expected, looks the most interesting. There is a camera with a resolution of 108 megapixels, a 120 Hz screen, and 8/128 or 8/256 GB of memory. The device is also equipped with a 5000 mAh battery with 33-watt charging, Helio G99 SoC and a 6.78-inch Full HD+ display.

The Hot 40 is similar to the older model, but it has a screen with a frame rate of 90 Hz, is based on the Helio G88 and a 50 MP camera. The remaining parameters are identical.

The younger model Hot 40i is more different. The heart here is the less productive SoC Unisoc T606, the basic amount of RAM is 4 GB, although there is also a version with 8 GB, the screen here has HD+ resolution with a diagonal of 6.56 inches and supports a frame rate of 90 Hz, and charging power is limited to 18 W. Other parameters are the same as Hot 40.

It is also worth noting that all models received IPS screens.
